my wife's HTC Tilt is going tango uniform and I want to get her a droid, and not an aria like mine, it's OK, but too freaking small. Is the captivate a good droid?

I have the captivate. This is my second one. The first one i got back in august never got the android 2.2 os. Then a couple months ago the phone just started shutting off randomly for no reason. I guess it was a hardware error they new about but sold the phones anyways. Now my new captivate is running anroid 2.2 the battery seems to last much longer. And so far no random shutting off. So time will tell. But i really like the droid 2.2 os.

The Captivate is a great phone with some small issues. The early models had the whole "power down" issue. AT&T and Samsung decided to continue selling the problem phones anyway despite knowledge of the issue. Jackholes. Supposedly, all Captivates manufactured in 2011 are supposed to be "power down"-free. My second has been good so far. The battery only lasts a day and a half with normal use. The screen size is great, the processor is fast, and Swype rocks. I'm happy with the phone; not so happy with the carrier. They disable much of the built-in functionality (like tethering) so you will be forced to pay for it. Same old story, I guess. I wish they'd stop holding out on the OS upgrade. I've heard good stories after rooting it, though, if you are up for that.

I was looking at the Captivate early this year, but heard too many complaints about the GPS (slow to locate, not accurate) that I passed on it and got the new Motorola Atrix.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Pass on the captivate and atrix and head straight to Costco for the inspire at $20 on a 2 year upgrade.

Then root it and install the desire hd rom from the xda forum.

This gets rid of the ATT pre-installed crap and unlocks the data restrictions.

the inspire is nice, but it is too big for me, and I wanted the dual-core processor and fingerprint scanner that the atrix has.

it is nice that you have more ROM options with the inspire vs. the atrix, but there are Atrix ROMS that remove all the ATT and motorola stuff and get you as stock as possible.

I second Corbin Dallas. I'm a pretty active Android tinkerer with both the Captivate and now Atrix. Buying a Captivate is like playing roulette. You can get lucky and get a decent phone (but still with broken GPS functionality), or you can get screwed and get a phone that will surprise you with a slew of reliability issues. I don't wish the Captivate on anyone, and it's also getting to be a relatively old phone (in regards to technology lifespan).

The Atrix is a better out-of-the-box phone, but it still has a few quirks. For me, I'm starting to really hate Motorola since they have locked down the phone to 3rd party developers which makes it really hard for me to customize/play around with my phone.

I have a few friends who are all in the same boat as me (Captivate -> Atrix), and we are all planning to pick up HTC Inspires in the next few weeks to hold us through for a few months. While the Inspire doesn't have as great of specs as the Atrix, it seems to be a pretty solid phone, and HTC is a pretty decent company.

Bottom line....stay away from the Captivate like the PLAGUE.

There are pretty much no Atrix ROMs right now. You can't do anything without getting access to the bootloader which Moto has locked, and chances of cracking the key is damn near impossible. All the things you see right now are basically scripts that do a little tweaking here and there, but the end result is still messy.

I've grown very fond of the fingerprint scanner, but that alone isn't enough to totally make me happy with the phone. Moto is really restricting this phone... In the last few days, they gave the opportunity for users to sign up and download an Atrix update before it would be released to the public. Before this update, we were able to root the Atrix. After this update, no root methods are currently working on the Atrix, and may people can't see any performance difference in the new update aside from the fact Moto closed up some holes for exploits we were using to customize the phone....making things even harder.

If they would release the bootloader and be acceptive of 3rd party developers like Samsung and HTC (pre-Thunderbolt), the Atrix has the potential to be a truly amazing phone. Until then, the Atrix community is hoping for a breakthrough with rooting this new update and trying to enlist some guys to crack the bootloader.
