Word of advice: Don't get a Mac.

Now, having said that, go to Costco, Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com for good deals. Costco has some good deals especially when you find something for 100-200 dollars off.

Also, I see you posted a couple Toshiba, never been a fan, but to each his own. I prefer HP, but honestly don't be afraid to get an Asus or something like that. Some of the cheaper laptops are good for what you pay. If they only last you a few years, well hey, you only spent a few hundred on it.

Also, no matter what you get, right when you get it, make sure to do a fresh install of windows on it. No matter who the manufacturer is, they will install a ton of crapware on it, and you will see a definite slowdown from it.

He said he had a $600 budget, can't get an empty Mac box for that.

I think tugerdirect might sell something other than computers.

+1 on Costco. Please don't shop at Bestbuy.

The Dell is a good choice, you might check on Lenovo too, they made the IBM Thinkpad laptops before they put their Lenovo name on it.

I have had only Dell laptops for the last 6 years or so. I've only had one serious issue, and that was mostly my fault. The ones you get at Best Buy are sometimes a little cheaper than Dell direct. My desktop is Lenovo, I like them because they don't come with all the bloatware that Dells come with.

Or, learn how to use one, save a ton of money over having to buy a Mac, having to learn how to use one, not being able to work on or repair yourself, etc. etc. etc.....

You really don't need to defrag your hard drive, but if you feel you need to, go ahead, in fact, you can schedule it to be done for you while you are not using it. Smart, right?

If you are too inept to use a PC, then yes, you should get a PC for Dummies Mac.

Honestly, bloatware Crapware doesn't bother me. I haven't bought a computer in a LONG time, last one I bought was an HP Laptop, Everything else I have built myself for a fraction of the cost (well, it usually ends up being the same or more, because I want all the best things, and of course I have my "Spare no expense machine" lol).

Many machines that come pre-installed with crapware are cheaper than the ones that don't. Reason being is sometimes, not always, companies will pay the manufacturer to add their crap[ware] to the new PC you are wishing to purchase, and they generally pay a decent premium depending on the company. This in turn may, on some occasions, help reduce the price of your PC.

That being said, I don't mind the crapware. If I (or a friend or family member) buy a new PC, I will take the liberty of doing a fresh install of Windows. This will get rid of all the crap that comes with the PC and help you to have a better running machine. People who don't do this, usually come to me after several months with a clogged up machine and a messed up registry. A reformat and fresh install is pretty much my only remedy, as it is free, easy, and becomes very quick if you familiarize yourself with the machine and your file layout. My desktop takes less than 20 minutes to format, reinstall windows, and be up and running in the exact setup as before.

Its not the best unit available, but it has good specs.

Costco is a buy and try store. If you don't like it, return it in 90 days, they give you your money back.

Roomate just bought a complete desktop with 23" monitor at Costco for $300 plus tax. With the extra $$$ you can get a 2TB HD and 4 gigs of RAM (comes with 3).
