How do I rename the hard drive?

I am running XP, and just replaced the HD. When I got Windows installed, the computor is now showing the HD as Drive J, rather than Drive C that it used to be.
Since some of my programs and games load to C drive as default, how I do I change the name of the drive?
When I click on the HD icon in "My Computor" and right click to Rename, and try to rename it, it will accept the change to "C". However, it also retains the "J", so it becomes "(C (J".
How do I get it to be simply drive "(C?

Well, I just went there and tried that. What I got was "Windows will not allow the name change".
I think I may go in, and unplug all the 'drives', leaving only the Master CD-Rom, and then reload Windows and see if that works.

Paul is right - you don't want to rename it, you want to change the drive letter.

I've had this happen before. It has to do with some quirk about when windows was installed/re-installed, what drive letters were allocated and what were available.

One warning: don't go nuts on reinstalling software until after you've made the change.
Sometimes, installed applications get set to look at the installed drive vs. <SYSTEM DRIVE>\folder or <WINDOWS PATH>\folder

Bottom line: you may need to reinstall a few things.

You might have to change the existing C Drive to something else first, so you can rename the drive you want to be C:.

I you installed XP on a system with other existing drives, occassionally one drive will grab C: leaving Windows to install on something other than C:. Try to re-install, if possible, with only the drive you want to install Windows on. The connect the other drive(s).

Ok. I unplugged the "Drives", which are all the slots for photo cards, flash drives, etc. Reformated and now am reinstalling Windows.

so the only drives hooked up are the hard drive and the cd drive, right?

Right. That seemed to fix the problem after I reformated and reinstalled Windows. Once I got the first boot up to working Windows, I checked and it showed the HD as Drive C and the Primary CD-Rom as Drive D.
Then, I shut it down, and plugged in the secondary CD-Rom, and then rebooted and it(the secondary CD-Rom) came up Drive E.
Then I shut it down again, and plugged in all the ports/slots that it was calling "Drives" and now everything is back to what it should be.

I had this happen once and yeah when installing proggies they wigged out b/c my OS wasn't on "drive C". Ended up reformatting and reinstalling the OS. Thankfully I didn't get too deep before I noticed. Since then I'm more carfull about what drive letters I assign to slave drives and partitions.
