    Antivirus Issues

I have Kaspersky 2010 which Im looking to replace soon. Today, The update ran at 100% For two hours, until I shut down and it said it was completed 28 minutes ago. But it was running up until I shut down. Any idea?
Also, I have a ''quarantined'' item found on 2/13 That was ''legal software that can be used for damaging your computer" And KS Says that my computer is protected. Any input is appriciated.

Never been a fan of Kaspersky, we have that at work and it sucks!

I'd go with AVG free edition or Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

      Avast free edition
Malwarebytes paid version--lifetime license rather than yearly
SuperAntispyware: install the free version, run the update manually. When the update is done, a window will pop with a $9.95 offer in it. Click the link to go to their website. Once there, add on the lifetime subscription for another $9.95. You end up with a lifetime license for under $20. Caveat: you will have to uninstall the free version, then reinstall and add the license key once you have it.

This is my basic desktop level of security. I add Spybot also. I have started using Eset Smart Security on several of my computers in the office instead of Avast and really like it. I also use an Untangle box in the office for filtering on the edge of my network.

MS Security Essentials captured a few items that Avast and Malware Bytes failed to get. I've heard more than one tech person tell me it's now the standard.

          Good information to have.

Guess that I always figured that if Microsoft knew how to keep their OSs secure, they should build that functionality into the product in the first place.

I 2nd the AVG, that's what we use where I work. We also use spybot for malware lookups. Kaspersky is the best of the paid scanners but they're all memory pigs, avg is just as good but isnt a resource sucker.

Microsoft Essentials saved 2 of my family computers that were
running so slow----both computers had one bug that other protection
didn't pickup. I had to let them do a complete scan for about 4 hours but
really fixed them---I will not pay for virus protection again as long as
                    Microsoft is free. Pete

My last virus attack bypassed Avast and exploited Malware Bytes - When I exhausted my own tricks and research I took the computer to some pros ... After they fixed my system they told me to use MS Security Essentials and to get rid of Avast and Malware Bytes.

I am personally not a fan of most antivirus programs. They bloat up and intentionally leave traces behind to spy when you uninstall them. And quite frankly, they're easy as heck to bypass by any half-way decent techie.

                          I like using combofix.

No live protection (which shouldn't be a problem if you're not downloading crud 24/7 or opening emails from nigeria), but its clean, simple, non-invasive, and HANDS DOWN the best virus removal program out there. You sacrifice some of the aesthetics, but its much more powerful and it leaves logs that can help you figure out how the virus got into your computer to begin with and what else might have been missed.

Norton is a resource hog. Mcafee is just well known.
Generally i recommend Kaspersky (which is also relatively heavy on the computer for good reason), or ESET (which is slightly less heavy on the computer resources)
