My laptop gets a little warm...got a question..??

Ive never had a laptop/notebook before and was wondering if they are indeed ok to use on your lap..?

It just seems that all that heat could be bad for it or are they designed for that..?

Any good reasonable acc. out there I should be looking at..?

    Thanks , Trendy

If you had a Mac you could download this app for free. I use it and it's awesome, don't know if there's a version or something similar for PC.

And to everyone...yes , i realize the irony in my question "can i use a laptop in my lap?"...but i just always thought a cool computer is a well functioning computer.

Being an ex old time Apple Support person what I can tell you is that the standard company answer is "it's A "Portable" NOT a laptop". Picking hairs? you bet, getting warranty work because of heat related issues?

Good luck unless it's known design flaw. Do OS updates sometime screw with the fan setting? YES, would using a piece of non Apple or MS software to control your system's cooling be wise??? I don't think I need to answer that one.

And your correct in your statement about "Laptops" but try to get many companies to admit it.

I have a dual fan cooling platform for mine. Everybody here is required to use it. Keeps your CPU is good shape.

          Get something like this:

          http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Targus+-...&skuId=9427042

Office Depot or Staples should have a good selection.

Lap tops these days are pretty much all portable computers. If it gets too hot, take it off your lap, if it shuts down take it off your lap, until then it should be okay.

From what I was reading , most if not all "Portable Computers" have temp controlled fans , and that heat isnt really damaging unless the fan malfunctions or the temp control ceases to work. Ive noticed the fan doesnt really kick into gear unless im watchin movies..gaming..etc etc. So i guess the heat is pretty normal....its just a little annoying.

definately annoying, I'm affraid to put my laptop down on my desk without something in between. It's never over heated but it runs so hot I can't put it on my lap for more than 5 minutes.... and it's not a mac

Try using those air cans to spray out the dust collected on the fans -

IMHO laptops do tent to get pretty hot especially if you are charging while use. I would not recommend having a laptop on your lap at all. One I have heard it will sterilize you and two it can block the passage that the cool air takes to get into your laptop to cool it. My Net Book get air from underneath the computer so if I have it on my lap it is restricting air flow to cool it down.

I've had to replace the graphics chip set on my wife's HP laptop twice in the past 6 months - apparently there's a know (wish I'd known BEFORE we bought it!) design flaw - CPU and graphics chip set are right next to each and the CPU gets hot enough to fry the graphic. And yeah, poor fan design or something, 'cause that sucker does get very hot. My Thinkpad never even come that close.

It is okay, your lap will be fine at any range of temperatures that doesn't cause burns. According to a study by SUNY-Stonybrook, even 20 minutes of laptop use will raise scrotal temperatures enough to negatively affect sperm production. However, production is a continual process, so after some time your counts will be right back up to normal.

This. Do it on a regular basis. You'd be amazed at the crud that blows out. Also open up any access panels (memory, HD) and remove any removable drives and the battery too. Blow the canned air into every orifice you can find on the thing. Amazing what debris will fly, and it'll improve your battery life too, because if the heat sink is covered in dust bunnies, it is not as efficient at removing the heat, and this makes your fans run more. More fan running = less battery life.
