    Goodbye Blackberry, hello Droid

After over two years of dedicated service, my Blackberry Bold is slated for retirement. I pre-ordered a Motorola Atrix yesterday. New phone, new OS, no more Blackberry PIN service but most daunting, no more physical keyboard. Kinda sad, kinda excited, anxiously awaiting it's arrival.

I switched from Blackberry to the android os (first with the evo and then to the epic) and I am back to my Blackberry. The push email is something I cannot live without on my work phone.

That's my biggest concern as PX emails get pushed to my Bold and I do alot of CS work from it when I'm out and about. The droid can be setup to fetch emails, right?

I went from a Palm Treo I had for 6 years to the HTC Incredible last year and couldn't be happier with the switch. I've also got a Bold for work, but I try and avoid using it at all costs. The blackberry messenger is about the only thing I would miss if I was able to actually get rid of it though.

Edit: Droid will fetch Exchange email, it works the same was as the iPhone and many others, by grabbing it through your company's webmail site. I setup my work email on my droid to see what the difference was in email delivery time between Blackberry and it and it ended up being a crapshoot as to which one would get the email first.

The android doesn't do push emails (as far as I could figure) it works like outlook works where at a pre-set period of time it looks up what is in your mailbox to grab mail. I could never get it to work right, and I would always finding myself hitting the send/receive button. Aside from that, I really liked the way both the phones worked and they had a lot of features, but email timing for me is critical to business.

THT, I was in the same boat as you last year. I had a BB Bold, and everything was fine but I took the chance on the Android OS with the Samsung Captivate...and I'm hooked.

I had the same reservation as you though, "I'm going to really miss having a physical keyboard". Before Android, every phone I had was equipped with a physical keyboard (Palm, Blackberry). So yeah, I was a little hesitant going to touch screen, BUT I've found that there many different types of touch screen keyboards on the Android OS, and you are bound to find one that will work for you. For me personally, I have grown very fond of the "Swype" keyboard which is very different from your normal "peck at each letter" keyboard. I'm sure you'll find something that works for you.

And regarding push mail, thank goodness my corporate email is on the Google Apps backbone. Because of that, push mail for my work and personal email works without a hitch!

Switched to a Droid X from a non-smartphone and couldn't be happier. I can run my entire business from my Droid if I have to, in case my business network goes on the fritz.

My BB picked up the order email before Outlook did.

It's good to hear from converts. Hope it's not a very painful transition. I may not be 30 yet but I'm pretty set in my ways

See, push email is instant. But if there are methods of getting push email on an android than that should work just as good.

I just switched from a BB Bold to the Droid X and I love it. I did miss the keyboard at first, but Swype is awesome and there are so many other features that make up for having to change from what I was used to. Just being able to surf the web and actually DO something on a website is worth it. The BB totally sucked when trying to browse and click on something... almost impossible. The Droid makes it look easy.

I have all of my company email going through Gmail since google hosts our mailservers, so it works seamlessly and pushes messages with no problems.

I think you'll be glad you switched.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
