Ring a bell? XP Pro, all patches and updates EXCEPT I am not sure about last nights nor what the operator (wifey) was working on before the most recent restart.

I know how to save data, etc. and wipe the drive, and would rather not.

Googling indicates a registry error (with a really involved fix, Q307545), or the sasser worm, which seems unlikely.

Wondering about a fix other than Q307545.

Mac and Linux users, I love ya, but this one has to run Windows.

If you never set a password on the 'Administrator' account you can hit (ctrl+alt+del) twice at the login screen and login as 'Administrator' with no password. You should be able to make a new account then.

Thanks Jday. I tried your clt alt del idea at various times during startup, and there was no change, other than forcing a restart during post which I think i normal. There is no login screen. It posts, then there is the windows splash screen, in color, which blinks once, then the mouse pointer for a moment, then the error message. I have clicked ok on the error message, no change. I have tried safe mode, safe mode command prompt, last good configuration...............same result, a never ending loop.

You will need to boot it from CD or USB, then fix the registry problem. If you can find a copy of ERD Commander, that would be the simple way to fix.

Sounds like you need to backup your files then do a clean install. This is one reason I do not miss XP.

Used ERD to go back a few days to a restore point. The recent windows updates are causing the problem. Haven't figured out which one yet. Thanks socalblue!!!
