    Intels billion dollar mistake

Anybody have a Sandy Bridge CPU? it seems that Intel has recalled all mother boards for these chips due to faulty sata 2 contollers.

I bought a 2500K Sunday. I normally don't buy cutting edge, but the price/performance made the decision for me.

Of course, the error was made public Monday.

Newegg sent me an email promising me a new mobo when they become available. Such is life.

Intel could save some money by just sending out PCIe SATA controller cards.

I don't think people who buy these want a band aid fix.

They're catching it fairly quick and making good. They'll be fine.

It's my understanding that the sata 3 ports won't be affected so if you have already one of these boards you could simple plug your devices into them.

Only ports 2-5 are affected. So unless you have multiple drives, RAID, etc. you can just use 0-1 and never experience the problem.

Sadly, SSD + HD + DVD. It's not the end of the world - there are a couple of workarounds - but it is annoying.

Dunno that this is really that bad - 6% degradation in performance over 3 years of heavy usage. That means that if you are using a standard 7200rpm SATA 2 drive, you will go from 70mbps R/W speed to 67mbps R/W speed.

In other words, nothing worth worrying about. Good that Intel is fixing it regardless.

Correct, and that's what end users can do immediately to get things running.

Yeah, its nice they caught it so quickly, but they should have done a bit more testing before they released them but it happens. This is why I never buy anything when it first comes out.

My understanding of the failure is that it wasn't so much of a degradation but more of over a 3 year timeframe 5% of the parts SATA ports would fail. Even for a laptop that's pretty rough. At least they learned something from the Toyota fiasco.....

Besides its a lot of money, but they just finished a year with 40+ billion in sales so they can probably afford it. Maybe they will pay NVIDIA those licensing fees late or can they still return MacAfee?

I am just bummed since I was about to buy one, now I gotta wait an extra month or two since I think no chipsets shipping for at least like a month or so.

Just buy a P67 mobo with a Sandy Bridge CPU on Ebay - they are relatively cheap due to the recall. Then buy 2 SATA III drives - one SSD for the OS, and one large 7200 RPM drive for storage. The SATA III controllers were not included in the listed problems.

You get a cutting edge board and CPU setup for cheap, as the prices have dropped. And you won't see the problem, as you will be using SATA III.

                              That's what I'd do.
