Bought the Canon 85 f/1.2L lens

I ordered the Canon EF 85 f/1.2L II USM lens last Wednesday from B&H.

I have to refrain from posting photos taken with the actual lens itself, since posting any of the photos I have taken with it so far will most likely result in a thread deletion.

Wow, 1.2... amazing. My old Canon AE-1 Program had a 1.4 and I thought I was special

      Way to go!

          pics or gtfo.

For the neophytes here...why is that lens so expensive? I always figured price tags like that were reserved for the giant paparazi telephoto lenses...

It's a faster lens (i.e. bigger aperture). Gives the photographer more flexibility in camera settings.
The bullets with my name on it I'm not worried about, it's the "To whom it may concern" ones I'm worried about.

Yup, the giant, lighting fast f/1.2 aperture makes it very expensive. In comparison, I have a little 50mm f/1.8 that only cost me $80. It takes a lot of high quality glass and engineering to get great image quality at f/1.2, hence the price tag.

I can't post pics. Thread will get locked/deleted. Explore my signature line for pics with the lens.

Canon only makes two lenses right now that will open up to f/1.2, a 50mm and a 85mm. As indicated by earlier response, f/1.2 is very hard to achieve. It requires a lot of glass elements and large glass elements. Also, since it's an L-series lens, they use very high quality glass.

As far as price tag, the high end telephoto lenses are far more expensive that the 85 f/1.2L. To go 300mm f/2.8 will be $4300, and 300 isn't even that long a lens. The Canon 400mm f/2.8 is $7000.

It's a wide 'L' lens - part of the Canon Pro series. If you thought guns were an expensive hobby... I spent more on my flash than the last rifle I bought...

I know quite a few pro's shooting on a $29.99 Holga! Not all photography is expensive, its just as expensive as you want it to be.
The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

My 24mm L f/1.4 lens was $1700 and I consider it well spent. Next I'm getting the 5D for $2500, then the next on the list is the 50mm L f/1.2 then on to the 85mm L f/1.2. I get irritated when photographers next to me keep blinding everyone with their damn flash and I know how their photos are generally going to look. Now if only Los Angeles would start issuing CCW's!!! After I shoot you, I'd shoot you.
