    PS3 users- Netflix news

    Saw this on another forum.

    Netflix is going to start 1080p streaming and 5.1 surround... AND no more disc needed.

    Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i 1080p resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course. Update: Though the official PlayStation Blog originally reported the service would display streaming video at 1080i resolution, they've since struck that out -- they say it'll do 1080p now. Much better.

              the netflix disc on the PS3 is horrible. It seems every couple of weeks I have to delete the BD data from it and reinstall in order to use it. I hope the application is a lot better.

                          Weird. I have a few discs for multiple ps3's I own. Never had a problem getting one.

                              I've never heard of that problem either. Sounds like you should have gotten another disc. I bet the installed app wont have that problem.

                                  Tried it out today, watched Ironman and Married With Children definitely upgraded. Its not 1080, but it is a great improvement. Hopefully Sony does not start charging extra for their online servers like Microsoft.

                                      doubt it since netflix is the one that owns all the media servers not sony.

                                      this is just the natural progression since xbox already has disc-less netflix streaming. (which many comment on why sony/wii didn't have it until now cause MS made a contract with netflix)

                                          Why not 1080? Are they only having limited 1080 streaming?

                                                  Not sure, it looked pretty good, not blue ray good but there was a big difference with Ironman. I did not expect Married With Children to look very good especially since I was watching season 3 1988? But it looked very good, very similar to when a blue ray player up converts a dvd. This is probably the best 10 bucks a month I spend.

                                                      I should have clarified, MS requires a gold membership to use netflix. I hardly play online with my xbox so I don't pony up the extra bucks for a membership. Where as Sony and Nintendo only require an internet connection.

                                                          The new netflix app is awesome. The video quality is crystal clear on both my tv's. Easily 1080p looking. The only problem I had is using the netflix on both my tv's. If I want to stream a movie on one ps3 and play games on the other ps3 I can't because it requires I login to my psn account and I cant be logged in to my account on two different ps3's. I created another psn ID for the one I stream movies on and it seems to be working fine now.
