What I'm specifically curious about is how/where they get the instrumental version of the song to dub over. Any of you computer experts have an idea?

Interesting...so, I guess when the musicians do the original, their master must be multi-track, and they (or someone else) just removes the vocal track(s) to produce a karaoke version? I'm totally a non-expert at this, but I think when we get a commercial CD, it's been reduced to two tracks only.

Karaoke versions are usually just re-recordings done by studio, or amateur, musicians. With multi-track recording software on a laptop you can record each instrument 1 at a time, playing to a click-track. As long as you have the tablature, or even a decent ear for figuring out guitar/bass/keyboard parts, you can re-record pretty much any song in the world by yourself. A lot of times karaoke songs aren't even recorded with real instruments, just the guitar/bass/horns/piano sounds in your average keyboard or synth.

all albums are recorded with multiple tracks. at least one per insturment. you could have any combination of tracks you want. you could just do the guitar or just the drums or just the vocals and bass. whatever you want.
