Importing images in excel - size reduction

Is there any way to import images into excel just as thumbnails, even if the source image file is say 1MB? Excel does have some shrinkage feature but its not effective. I have been doing this in 2 steps, ie making a low res version of the file then importing that into the excel. Must be a better way? Any help - much appreciated.

    BTW - using excel 2003

(I misunderstood you, not sure what I originally suggested would work for you... )

I don't think there's a way. I have 2003 also. I just looked and tried, even tried to insert an object but it won't create a thumbnail. Unfortunately, that's the busy work that needs to be done. Else if you have a photo editor that has batch capability and most of your pictures are of the same size (landscape, not portrait), you can run a batch process instead. For example, I use fireworks and I just find the right scale % number and run a batch.
