Android is a platform, not a phone. All this shows is that Android -- represented by a dozen (or more) different phones from different manufacturers on different phone carriers -- can, all together, outsell the iPhone -- one of 3 models of phone produced by a single manufacturer and sold on a single U.S. phone carrier. And one of those Android carriers had to practically give the phone away. This isn't news.

Nobody has practically given the phone away, and if Android wasn't good the devices wouldn't be selling. Open platforms are always better than a locked down one.

That is completely subjective. Well, other than the misrepresentations regarding the "failure" of the Android Market.

From someone that works in the industry, let me tell you that this IS absolutely news. The Android OS has grown exponentially over the past 6 months. Consequently, the user base has also exploded which will lead to increased revenue for devs, programmers and advertisers. If the user base continues to grow at this rate, which there is no reason to believe will slow in the short term, coupled with the iPhone exclusivity and BB's decline, Android will be the dominant OS in the country.

And this report is prior to both the Incredible and EVO 4G.

The iphone OS, and apple fanboys, reminds me of the movie Gattica. Everything is clean and sanitized for your consumption. You are allowed to do anything you want as long as it is within the choices given to you by the designers. Deviate from the norm and you are a criminal.

Android and its users remind me of every dystopian future sci-fi flick, where daily life might suck and the interface is dirty, but if you manage to figure out how everything works, you can make miracles happen. And there is no one there to save you from yourself.

Windows is constantly attacked by hackers who think they can prove they are smarter than Bill Gates.

Apple doesn't have that problem.

iPhones aren't the best, yet.

Android phones are NEW, and the focus of hackers worldwide. They will soon be as dependable (?) as a Windows o/s. I'll stick with my iPhone for now.

Apple is so locked down they will only have one new phone at a time, iphone runs on apple's OS and 2 phones were used in that study 3g 3gs. No one told Apple to be so communist and lock their phones and not let anyone use their OS but apple. Brainwashing their customers is so apparent as anyone with iphone feels like a god because they have the phone that started it all, they can't hold the crown forever.... Its their fault they don't release more phones so you can't use that Against Android.

Android is the new, free world which will over take apple if things continue on the trend, apple is losing market share, and android is gaining it. Soon we will see...

Single carrier, lol that is apples decision to only be on AT&T... and they chose the worst carrier as all iphone users I know complain about the service and rave about the phone but who cares about that phone when its dropping calls on you.

The reason why Apple runs their own OS on their own hardware is because that's how they've always wanted to do things. It helps keeps support simple.

Look at Microsoft Windows and the support nightmare that is. Not only is there the OS, but there's all the different hardware to run with it.

If something is wrong with Mac OS, they can easily remedy the issue since they control the hardware it runs on.

While this may or may not be the way to go as far as mobile phones are concerned, that's debatable.

I've got no problem with the Android platform. But there's nothing about Android that makes me want to jump ship from the iPhone. The iPhone works fine for my workflow as is.

But with all the talk about Android being 'open', I think you're going to find that eventually, the Android platform will adopt an Apple iTunes App store style model with regards to application submission, vetting, and selling in order to maintain quality control over what goes on phones. I'd also anticipate that as Android takes a bigger market share due to all the various phones available that run Android, there will be a divergence in application support even with the latest phone revisions, unless Google can force all manufacturers to have specific specs on their products. i.e. The newest phone from one manufacturer may not work with a specific application while the newest phone from another manufacturer will.
