What providers will let me use an unlocked motorola droid?

I need a new phone and I like the motorola droid. Unfortunately only Verizon has it and they are way more expensive. Can I buy one that is unlocked and use it with any other network?

the droid is CDMA only, ie stuck to verizon's service network. it won't work even when unlocked?

if anything, you should get the droid's international version "Milestone" same phone, just not dumbed down for verizon. and has GSM support

Sprint also uses CDMA technology for both voice and data...the Droid can be activated on their network, but there may be some issues with some features such as SMS working correctly. CDMA phones are inherently unlocked. They can be activated on any CDMA network that allows the MEID/ESN.

And out of curiosity, just how has the Droid been "dumb downed" for Verizon?

Correct. Verizon is CDMA technology so the only other carrier you would be able to go to is Sprint or maybe Metro PCS. If you phone uses a SIM card then your choices would basically be T-Mobile or AT&T.

That would be with a 2 year contract with Verizon, which the OP stated he did not want.

Just to clarify, there are two versions of the Milestone. One for North/South America and one for Europe and Asia. Neither will connect to CDMA (VZW/Sprint) for voice or data. They are only for GSM carriers and I believe only AT&T will provide 3G or H coverage.

The WCDMA 900/2100 is for UMTS.
