    Time Warner Illegal content message?

I got home today and my wife said the internet wouldn't open or work this morning, She said there was a message that came up from Road Runner (the ISP) saying something about our computer containing illegal content, she said it had a check box that she checked stating if you checked the box you would remove the illegal content or something along those lines. I really wish I could have seen the message and really understood it before just checking the box.

Anyone ever got that message or know why it would be popping up. I have never seen it, heard of it, etc. Any input would be appreciated.

If my wife had "checked" a box on a pop up message, I would scan my computer for malware and/or spyware right away. That just does not seem like a legit message from an ISP.

I have heard of something like this and it had to do with copywrited material. The guy was actually getting sewed for it by a internet provider. I thought it was in here where I read it. The guy lived up near Frisco or Sac. Basically stated the same thing about his provider sharing info to someone that he had material that was illegal. He stated he didnt know what they were talking about and ignored it. He even posted a pic of the summons and what they were after. Maybe the same thing. He never removed it and then got served. Try and find the story and Ill hunt around as well. Im pretty sure its the same as what you just got.

P.S I cant remeber what it was he supposedly downloaded Illegal.

Download current updates first (Windows and VirusScan software). Make sure you're off the network and/or disconnected from the internet (if you're wireless), then boot into safe mode and run a full scan.

I have to do this every so often for user computers here at work. Worse case, back up your personal files (docs, pics, music, etc) and reload the OS and reinstall your apps.

First look for and download MALWAREBYTES its free and it will scan your computer for malware. Also run a virus scan. If its none of that then she was downloading porn and tried to play it off.....

ok so i did a google search and found this!!!!

Anyone ever get these? Can anything bad happen from it? I've gotten one or two before, and nothing comes of it.

I try and get on the net and instead of the site I'm trying to get to, I get this message, I click that bottom link and then I can go back on the net again...
                  A Message from Road Runner

                  2nd RoadRunner Copyright Notice

I am aware of this issue and will take steps to resolve it.

                  Dear Subscriber:

Road Runner Customer Care is sending you this notice because we have received a complaint
from a content owner that your computer has been used to distribute copyrighted material (music,
movies, computer software and/or television programs) without authorization through a peer-to-peer
program. This is at least the second complaint we have received from a content owner about your
account. Our last notice to you was sent by email.

As we explained to you in our earlier email, in addition to being illegal, peer-to-peer
trafficking in copyrighted works violates the Road Runner terms of service. It is therefore
extremely important that you inspect your computer for peer-to-peer programs, and ensure that you
are not - - either intentionally or inadvertently - - making copyrighted works available for
uploading by others. RoadRunner has a policy of terminating the accounts of repeat copyright
offenders, and we do not wish to lose you as a valued customer.

For information on the problems associated with peer-to-peer file sharing, please follow
                  this link: http://research.pestpatrol.com/white...p2p_impact.asp.

If you use the Windows OS, the best way to remove peer-to-peer programs is through the
Add/Remove Programs tool. Other removal options are discussed at
                  http://security.uchicago.edu/peer-to...ileshare.shtml.

In order to gain access to your Road Runner account and the Internet, please click on the
hyperlink at either the top or the bottom of this page. Please be aware that the next time we
receive a similar complaint about your account, you will have to call us to regain Internet access.

Thank you for subscribing to Road Runner. We look forward to having you as a customer for
                  years to come.

                  Very truly yours,

                  Road Runner Customer Care

I have gotten something similar from Cox Communications. I checked the box saying I understand and left a comment stating I have no idea what they're talking about but I'll look into it. It's been a few years and haven't heard a peep since.

Thanks for that link, showed it to my wife and asked her if thats what the message looked like, thats exactly what the message looked like, except it wasn't it wasn't our second, it was the first. I've got limewire and Bittorrent but nothing is set up to allow uploading, I have no files on limewire that are public, and bittorent never shows anything uploading. From what I read that is where the issue is, the uploading/sharing. Well thanks everyone for the links, info, and insight. I'll have to look more into how to resolve my issue i guess.

You can get busted for downloading copyrighted material, not just uploading...
Most ISP companies would rather just shut off your access than fight with a movie or music company. It's even worse with Time Warner (being one).

You should definitely remove limewire its a big security hole on your pc.
don't trust windows firewall to keep you safe
you should also turn off the smartscreen filter in internet explorer.
it phones home about the webistes you visit.

Its not useful. use a good anti-virus program like bit-defender. norton kind of whatever. avg free or paid is not very good misses infected websites that load infected content onto your temporary internet files folder.

                          hope this helps out.
