looking for an ubuntu image viewer

not sure about how many bits i'll get here, but i was wondering if anyone knows of an image viewer for ubuntu like ifranview.

More specifically, something that widens the frame to fit the image when it zooms to 1:1, rather than have the frame stay the same size and I now have to look at the picture by using the scroll bars or resizing the frame each and every time.

    Have you tried Picasa?

Picasa. You can get it here.

What happens if you run in from CLI?

Any errors on the console? What about in your system log?

if I run thru terminal, which I think is what you mean by CLI, I get this:

              /usr/bin/picasa: line 139: 3234 Segmentation fault "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper check_dir.exe.so
              /usr/bin/picasa: line 175: 3339 Segmentation fault "$PIC_BINDIR/wrapper" regedit /E $registry_export HKEY_USERS\\S-1-5-4\\Software\\Google\\Picasa\\Picasa2\\Preferences\ \

If you google for seg fault errors with Picasa, there are apparently known issues with 2.7 and new Linux distros. Supposedly Beta 3 works fine.

I took the 30 minutes to install Ubuntu 9.10 in a Parallels VM on my Mac.

                      Installed Picasa 3 Beta.

                      Runs fine.

Did you install the correct version? I'd guess you're running the windows
version instead of the linux version here.

Also, if you just need a general image viewer, your browser can do that
                        already.

No, that seg fault error will also show in the Linux version. I know because I googled for it and as I stated before, this is a known issue with most new Linux distributions and Picasa 2.7.

If he had downloaded the Windows version, there's no way it would even run. Translation: he wouldn't even see a seg fault error.

well i got picasa beta 3 to work, thing is what I wanted was more along the lines of a light image viewer, this is not. My computer seems to be chugging along at 100% when running this. I said some thing like ifranview because it was simple enough with most of the controls out of the way. The general image viewer is out because it can only fit to screen or go 1:1 and i have to change the frame to fit. Ifranview was good because it opens up like a video file does, shown at 1:1 with the frame flush with the screen, the bare minimum.

If you're handy with command line tools, look at "xv"
