WiFi Monitor Utilities?

I am looking for a generic WiFi utility that will provide me as much data as possible on heard networks within range. It seems like modern OS' make a good effort to hide most of the information from the average user, making it more difficult on the rest of us to get some good information. This all stems from the fact that the built in UI no longer shows channel numbers for heard networks.
Any suggestions?

Dude, get a pill. Up to Windows Vista, basic WiFi stats would be provided from the control panel. Recent OS' obscure the information to avoid intimidating users.

PS: I have Putty and use SSL encryption on my laptop, I must be HACKER...

And, by the way, it's PHreaker, not Freaker. PH, of course, because phreakers were originall interested in how the telePHone system worked. This idea that wanting to know as much info as possible about stuff like this is somehow related to potentially illegal activity is utterly mind-boggling.

When you say data, what exactly do you mean? You can find a lot of info using netstumbler if you're on a windows box. If you want anything more, take a look at the wireless auditing tools available on Linux. Download and run Backtrack for a nice intro.

It is not the tool, but the conduct of the user with the tool.

On a windows machine, use netstumbler. It'll do a lot stuff, primarily tell you if there are any networks around and whether or not they're encrypted. It can do some packet capture... but I've not delved into it enough to go past that. Give a GPS feed and you'll be able to figure pretty much where the wireless networks pretty much are. It IS amazing to see how many wireless networks were unsecured back when...

Hmm, I don't believe netstumbler can do packet capture. For that, you'll need to go with Linux or use one of the airpcap adapters they sell.

sounds like you're using some type of current windows os, by your description. your best bet is to use netstumbler.

I have wi-fi analyzer. I can see channels, levels, freq, SSID, BSSID, encryp type.

You want Kismet, its the best non-hardware based solution. You'll also need a wireless card that supports monitor mode.

Take a look at kismet + aircrack-ng. I routinely use that pair to penetration test WEP "secured" wireless networks. It isn't hard, but I'm not sure if they run on windows.

You can get Mac OS X versions of those utilities or just use Linux like most computer security people.
