I like Dell's business line of Vostros. They have reinforced frames and none of the crapware you get on their consumer versions.

I got my toshiba satellite about a year ago. It had decent specs and, most notably, it's own dedicated 512MB graphics card. I paid ~$700 OTD for that, and any other brand with comparable specs was at least $1200. I have been very happy with it except for the battery life. They have longer life batteries that you can buy, but I've never gotten around to it.
Toshibas also tend to have very nice displays for their price range. In general, good bang for your buck.
Look around and see what prices you can get. Sometimes www.geeks.com has decent older models, if you don't want the latest and greatest.Guns don't kill people, people with mustaches kill people.Comment

Whatever you do, avoid anything with a Celeron in it; best bet will be something with a dual core, preferably an Intel. The rest of the specs will be dependent on what you intend to do with the machine; if you're going to do some heavy gaming, stick to a desktop.
Even though I hear great things about Lenovo's products, my experience with their phone support has been dismal. I called in and was on hold for 35 minutes to cancel an order, only to have it ship a week later despite the call. I called in again to RMA it and was put on hold for 45 minutes, fortunately the RMA process went a little smoother.Comment

best buy and fry's had the best prices for in store pickup on new units about a week ago. $3-350 gets you a perfectly good, fully functional laptop at 15.3". Be aware of the bloatware that will come with these, I believe they deliver or at least upgradable to windows 7, which I have found to be acceptable and much better than Vista.Comment

Best buy is usually over priced. Walmart has some good laptops for cheap. Always order online too, from like Dell or gateway etc.-General George S. Patton Jr.

I love my new HP dv6, much better than the Dell studio 15'' that only lasted 6 months before the mother board died.Comment
