Also, if you ever cross the US/Mexico border where they have the RFID sensors installed, it'll detect your Passport or Passport Card with RFID through the vehicle.

My friend who is on this forum might see this thread and chime in. But is actually a contractor who works on that border check system. He indicated that whatever they have to read your RFID chip in the passport was strong enough to read through the vehicle.

I was once told you can put it in the microwave but I was worried it would kill the card itself

Ive known people who have drilled the rfid out of the card

      I would do that

Didn't that video show the chip was under the radio symbol with waves? Why don't you try drilling a small hole through that symbol?

"They destroyed the actual card containing the RFID data that was pulled before they even analyzed it to see what information was gathered. "
True. But the vendor *did* know that something was read. There's no question about that. It wouldn't have been a big deal if he didn't.

RFID theft is real, and a 12 year old can do it. It's a white collar crime that could happen as you stand in line at Ralphs.

They have wallets that shielf RFID, but what's better is to get a card that doesn't have the chip. I'd like to see someone hack a store security system to scan people as they walk in and out. I've heard about it, but I think it was an academic study.

Yeah, but they gotta be within a few feet. I don't know where the RFID chip is...try googling it.
With a properly constructed antenna the signal can be picked up from much further. Best way to disable it is 3 seconds in the microwave (shouldn't hurt the magstripe).

With that said, I would NOT own a credit card with this technology. Someone out there will figure it out and be able to read card numbers from a distance by RFID. It's all a matter of time.
Actually its not a matter of time.

Think of it this way: Chris Paget just did you a service by hacking your passport and stealing your identity. Using a $250 Motorola RFID reader and antenna connected to his laptop, Chris recently drove around San Francisco reading RFID tags from passports, driver licenses, and other identity documents. In just 20 minutes, he found and cloned the passports of two very unaware US citizens. Fortunately, Chris wears a white hat; his video demonstration is meant to raise awareness to what he calls the unsuitability of RFID for tagging people. Specifically, he's hoping to help get the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative -- a homeland security project -- scrapped. Perhaps you'll feel the same after watching his video posted after the break. Read -- Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Read -- RFID passports cloned
