    Upgrade to windows 10?

I have a 10yr?? old HP Pavilion 64 bit 8 gb desk top computer that uses windows 7 professional.
Can I upgrade this to windows 10 and retain my current files?

Yes. Look up "In Place Upgrade to Windows 10" You'll get lots of answers.

I suggest using a large enough external drive to back up your entire C:\ drive, including the OS just in case something goes south.

Yes. Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and run it. It will do an in place upgrade of Windows 7. Theres one for Windows 11 as well but a computer that old is unlikely to be supported.

Before doing this, make two backups of that machine. Grab a couple external drives as big or bigger than your current internal drive.

Last I heard, Dan, is that support for Win 10 will end during 2025.

According to MS, support will end on 10/14/ 2025 for the latest build 22H2 which was issued on 10/18/2022.

Just my opinion, but if one has a robust anti-virus program installed, you should be safe running Win 10 for a long time.

You can easily find out which version of Windows you are using via the "Run" command.

            Start "Run"
In the "Open:' box type winver and then click 'Run'.
The current build version will be displayed.

How does it do now with Win7? Win10 does use a little more resources than 7 but not too much more. If it is already slow on Win7, it will be even slower on Win10.

Have you considered switching to Linux? Linux performs much better than Windows on older PCs. I would recommend creating a bootable Linux USB drive and trying it out.

Did this 7->10 on my 8yr old Dell Precision laptop. Win10 updates expire next year, but (as noted above) with a good anti-virus (in my case ESET) I plan to stay on Win10 Pro. Win11 doesn't like my processor anyway.

Win7 is better. Stick with it.

Keep in mind that you might have to update some of your existing software as well.

I like Windows 7 better than 10, but some modern apps may not be compatible with 7. I still have a Lenovo Thinkpad x230 with 7 and it still works fine.

how do you do this for free? Windows 7 to 10 upgrade is nolong free, and there is no point paying for a Win 10 license now when it is end of life.

I had win 10 installed on a HP server mainframe, mostly to update the drivers.

They don't work either, waste of time.

That PC mostly collects dust, better to just leave it off.
