Start up no POST

Came home this afternoon, hit the power button, keyboard and mouse lit up like usual, lights on the screen lit up like usual, no splash screen, no POST, no beeps. Great, check connections, good. Restart, same thing, pull the power cord to clear anything, restart, same. OK, replace the CMOS battery, same result.

So with that said, what's next?

Machine is a almost 2 year old Alienware R13.
32 GB DDR 5 RAM
Nvidia 3090
2 TB SSD
Intel 12xxx cpu

I had the exact same problem with an AMD/Ryzen desktop that's about 3 years old now. It turned out that if it didn't shut down properly for any reason it would go into a mode where you have to power it on/off multiple times before it would even boot to the BIOS/POST screen.


Try cycling power multiple times, give it a minute or two each time before using the power button to turn it off. It could take 5-10 tries doing that before it boots to a POST screen. I can't remember how many boot cycles it took for mine it's been a while since it happened.

Unplug. Reseat mem, all cards and power to mobo.
It should beep if mem is the issue, but the cards could prevent POST.
If you have a vid card and onboard vid and reseating didnt help, yank vid card and use onboard. Video card fan may have seized and burned up.

If that doesnt work, try disconnecting drives and see if it POSTs. If a HDD/SSD shorted, it will put the PSU into protection. I had that happen once.

OK, yeah, planning on trying each DIMM individually in slot 1, SSD is screwed to the mobo, will remove the HDD, haven't used it yet, and want to upgrade it to something larger anyway.

If it is the video card then I guess a 4090 is in my future.

My first thought would be reseat/diagnosis each DIMM, followed by test with onboard VGA.

Do you have a spare HD/SSD? May want to unplug that and test a different one - I've seen corrupted Windows on HD/SSDs prevent POST (which required plugging in a different drive, running the Windows Install Tool to "fix the corrupted drive").

I tried each DIMM individually with no result, ran it with the HDD unplugged and nothing. Going to pick up the York bit the unhook the SSD that on the motherboard this afternoon. I've got everything except the water pump for the cpu disconnected at this point.

If nothing else I will take it I to the shop tomorrow.

I had the same problem once. And solution was like in this video. I just kept removing and putting back in the same 2 memory cards, and changing their position around, until it worked. It has worked for a year now, using this computer every day. I think this is the most likely thing that is OP's problem too.

Intel 12xxx cpu with integrated graphics or not ? If yes, plug your monitor into your MOBO display out. If you get video, your graphics card is shot.

If not, try using / borrowing any graphic card you can get your hands on that you know works.

That would be my 1st process of elimination step before I went on to other things like Ram, SSD, etc since from your initial description it sounds like the PC is booting up normal but you just have no video.

Does your mobo have a numeric LED display? If so what, if any, code is it showing?

Swapped in an old video card from my last computer and sure enough, worked just fine. Going to swap in a 4080 Super tomorrow.

You’ll be happy with the 4080. I’ve been running the same setup for over a year. 12700 and OG 4080 . Runs every thing seamless full settings 1440p. Very happy with it. You should be too.

Was getting 40 fps at 4k full settings in Helldivers, hopefully get more with this new one.
