    Browsing test, please

When I browse to this site, http://www.columbia.edu/cu/computinghistory
It gets changed to https and I get a 404 error.

Columbia I.T. Claims there is no problem on their end. They don?t have a certificate so http should work. I have tried the link in 7 browsers on my iPad. They all fail.

    What say youse guys?

Using my Android phone just now I do not get a 404 error (although it does look like a web page from 1987 ) but there is a statement at that page that says they're getting reports of them...

.... "....Reports are arriving from people who find that attempts to access this site (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/computinghistory) from certain browsers (both computer-based and cell-phone based) fail with a 404 code ("page not found"), indicating that for these browsers "non-secure" websites no longer even exist. Need I say that there is no way that a read-only website is non-secure? Nevertheless, this is no doubt a trend, and soon all other browsers (e.g. Firefox) will succumb to it. I'll see if I can find a new home for the site."

Funny, I just used Firefox on my Galaxy S24 Ultra and it worked. I will contact the author with the Columbia incident number.

The website isn't set-up for https. Maybe you have a browser plugin that automatically tries https instead of http?
There is no week nor day nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves -- and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance -- Tyranny may always enter -- there is no charm, no bar against it -- the only bar against it is a large resolute breed of men.
