    Streaming TV w/local channels

Who do you think is the best overall service, and why?

I've been looking at switching over to streaming TV from U-Verse and am looking at the various providers:

    SlingTV

    DirecTV Stream
    Hulu
    Fubo
AppleTV - Does it have local channels?

    Others?

Sling looks like the cheapest for a basic local channel set, and Hulu looks like a better option for a large package channels and included on-demand programming. Fubo is also interesting it seems to have a larger channel lineup & local channels but no on demand archive.

I need local channels via service provider, I'm not picking up any over-the-air digital channels where I live. We are shadowed by hills to the west where the broadcast towers are located (SF).

AppleTV is simply a device - which hosts apps for things like Hulu, etc.

We switched to YouTubeTV for streaming 'conventional' television with local channels a bit over a year ago. Both image quality and price are significantly improved!

Check your internet plan with your ISP. Do you have any data limits? Cable TV is free regarding data. Streaming will eat your data plan.

For sure that's a potential issue. I think I actually still saved 50 bucks a month upgrading to unlimited-use Gigabit internet (vs 700GB cap at 300Mbit) when switching from cable-tv to youtubetv.

I've been using YouTubeTV for a few years now. I've tried others, but it's the best in my opinion.

Locast was pretty good, even had a Roku app.
            Now it's LocalBTV

We're in the process of switching to Verizon 5G Home internet. Got the router installed, the speed is good enough for our needs (85-300Mbps). It's way better than landline DSL we were on. It recently became available, I was looking at other options last month, and it's a 30 day free trial with no contract so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I looked at the plan terms carefully there isn't a data cap/limit on it. We are using 10-20GB/day with everything connected to it and no loss of speed/service so far.

ain't most home WWW ISP "all you can eat" and every so often it might slow down for various reasons, but for the most part they really don't care how much bandwidth, because its sorta like you don't care if your CPU is running at 7% or 90%, because it runs anyways?

Like they got all these "pipes" that are on&open, costs them same either way?

I'd think by now there would be at least local TV same as you see in newspaper online for free. I happened to have found a SF Chron ($3.00 weekday price, and it was THIN, and rather dumb TBH) so saw TV Guide and got to wondering. Wouldn't it be worth it if they showed the shows including news etc with TV ads just like if you had a TV with rabbit ears?

I bet they got that in Japan, and probably Mexico and Nigeria.

I am with Cox in Las Vegas. I have a 1 TB (1024 GB) data limit. For 12/6-1/5 period, I used 671 GB. My broadcast TV is done through the DVR and the TV signals. So all that internet data was YouTube, Prime vids, Netflix and misc site videos. If I went to something like Hulu, etc for TV shows I would go over my TB.

Best to check the ISP TOS.

Deciding on the best streaming service depends on your priorities. Sling offers the most basic local channel package at a budget price, but lacks on-demand content. Hulu provides a wider channel selection and on-demand library, but might be pricier. Fubo boasts a large channel lineup with locals, but skips on-demand archives. Since you need locals and can't get them with an antenna due to location, consider Hulu or Fubo based on whether you value on-demand content more (Hulu) or a wider channel variety (Fubo). Also check DirecTV Stream for local channel availability and pricing in your area.

The barbershop I go to uses YoutubeTV - I was surprised at the picture quality and channel selection. Definitely not the cheapest option, but a serious contender to the traditional wired (or satellite) service providers.

Do you have over the air reception ? If so I’d get an Amazon fire Tv or Roku enabled TV. Do OTA for your local channels and then things like Pluto Tv and what ever other streaming apps you like via an internet subscription. You can pick what you want to pay for. That’s what we do.

If you don’t have OTA most people go with sling or YouTube Premium.

i use mostly youtubetv, although i do have amazon prime for shows like reacher.

i use roku to switch between them. i recently paused hulu because i never got around to binge watching anything.

it isn't that cheap, like just having hulu, but it is sort of close to "cable" tv and you can "add to library" as many shows as you want, since it is really just bookmarking the shows and not "recording" them.
