Apple Goggles getting GREAT reviews! :)

Sounds like Apple decided to take the delays and "Get it exactly right".
Reviewers are showing that it can be full time much better than even multiple screens replacement for screens, and that more than Gaming, is the "killer app".

I'm psyched because it SEEMS like this could be great for CAD, and MAYBE could allow "reach out and touch it" manipulation, but if its just a great screen, and Reach Out and Manipulate the several screens that still be great.

LOOKS like you can see outside world just fine if you want your screens off to side and I'm guessing you can change how "see through" the screens are. I'm thinking you COULD drive a car with these, and drive even better with more data like "is that REALLY a nasty ditch?" and "what is REALLY the recommended speed through this road curves...based on Big Data from the prior 10yrs of cell phone tracking of other cars?".

How about a "Head Up Display" for Red Dot shooting of real gun with a link to your gun's red dot? Fire from the hip like you were looking through a scope (parallax also handled) or even hold a gun over your head over a brick wall and see there it will hit based on Google Maps terrain/satellite merged with data your Goggles captured just prior to ducking behind wall, or from auxiliary periscope cam.

$3500 is still a bit steep, BUT if you spread that out over 2000hrs work-year, or 365 days it seems like "can't afford not to" if you can be productive in ways you never could. If I could do 2 hours of good CAD during commute or other slack time it would be well worth it.

Maybe a Chinese knock off soon with just the multi-screen Killer App, but less of the Gaming super features which seems to be main Gee Wheez selling point.

Once the Oasis arrives, I'm in

We keep considering these for our CAD guys. They all have 3 or 4 32" or bigger monitors on their desks. If the resolution is good enough and performance good enough a VR headset could be an infinitely large screen. We do a lot of building walkthroughs in Navisworks and Revizto. Revizto has a lot of VR support built in for the HTC, Oculus, etc. We already use Hololenses in the field for some stuff and in the fab shop for skids or whatever.

It SEEMS like its "see through" so not only can you still see, I'm hoping there will be apps, maybe with other sensors, like Thermal, that will give you "enhanced reality" rather than "escape from reality".

I remember for about 1980s vintage "in the future..." film they said they had sensors able to detect "hostile intent" VS "relaxed" in humans at a distance. Combo of breathing patterns and head movements and tensed muscles. I've heard dogs can SMELL not just fear but also hostile intent. I'm told sensors used to make sure clean room workers are buttoned up correctly are pretty impressive, and small and cheap.

I think these Goggles might need cameras and other sensors on the BACK of the strap, and a way to display what is in behind you in a way that makes sense.

The Head Up Display of the F-35 allows the pilot to look down at the floor and see the ground or other stuff that is under the plane.

                I'm expecting a Chinese knock-off to include CHILDREN'S SIZES

Still gonna try to get "Demo" at Apple Store. Hopefully they have one geared for "grown ups" that just want the Killer App of simulated multi-big screens for "work" VS playing games.

hey there, technology insider anon here

the biggest thing this does is eyetracking biometric telemetry.

i.e. because the devices uses your gaze as a mouse, your eyes are now being captured in a novel form of telemetry.

combine this with safari and apple has really interesting new data. this, and other telemtry like this related to body position (hands, head, etc) are why many apps are not available on the platform.

For instance, if apple can collect info related to attention being paid during Netflix shows, they have data about Netflix consumption that Netflix does not have. They can then use this data to fund AppleTV products with a level of awareness that their competitor does not yet have.

Mostly it's **** like this if you're curious why these devices matter.

[QUOTE=OlderThanDirt;28367582]Dump this crap, go outside and live your life.

thats pretty much why I'm so interested. I (and many others here) like being outside or at least need to "be places" but also got lots of office/computer stuff they'd like to do, and/or get done while out of the home-office.

I see this as the next TWO big leaps after the Lock Down invented "Work From Home" craze.

Suppose you are looking at Real Estate, driving around. You COULD pull over and wipe out laptop, and its bulky sun-shield so you can actually sort of read the screen, to pull up some 'recently sold' and Estimates for properties around that area, over your cell phone hot spot, which is pretty cool. But I'm pretty sure with these Goggles you'd be able to drive around and see that data along with rest of what Zillow has (sq ft of house, lot, etc) on your head-up display (once such apps get developed). My understanding is currently you'd at least be able to pull up Zillow by typing on an imaginary keyboard and mouse, and re-size and keep that and other screens off to side or transparent.
Suppose you are at junk yard and see a car that might have the right part. You could use again mobile laptop and phone to pull up websites and look back and forth, but once your hands get greasy it would be nice to only type on virtual keyboard. Ditto for cooking.
IMO a Killer App could be Brick and Mortar stores having their shelves mapped out, and items with bar codes facing out. At night a robot with a camera on a mast would go up and down each aisle to scan codes into data base for updating. At the store you'd be directed to your item and/or it could show you virtual break down of what in the box. They always put Pizza Sauce in some weird place, not with tomato or pasta sauce, not with BBQ or ketchup, not with "Italian", off is some little section with pizza dough mix, which is maybe hidden on the ***-end of cake mix or Hamburger Helper or Mac and Cheese boxes.

Also finding BATHROOMS, maybe with user updated data on their condition and hours.

Trust me it's going to be a fad, like the pet rock, the home computer, the cell phone, yo-yos and prawn.

It's pretty freakin sweet but definitely feels a little unpolished. Older folks seem to be more susceptible to eye strain and headaches.

Greek from 4Chan reports Greece is buying these for all cops!
Remember when every cop started wearing those mirror Aviators and thought they were so cool because you couldn't see their eyes.
Did they make them stop doing that? For "community relations"?

I do some mostly "warm body" security so I want one of these to be semi-productive at "work", but now that someone mentions it these seem like they'd be ideal for active LEOs and even at $4Gs(two battery packs of course) be a no brainer as far as cost benefit and productivity:

                            1)looking at perp's rap sheets
2)facial recog sent back to headquarters and perp's dox flashed back
3)upgraded Google Maps, maybe linked with satellite or drone over-watch for real time "see through buildings" traffic.
4)night vision, maybe using outside data feed from other sources
5)just much, much better in squad car data screen, while still able to keep eyes peeled
6)no more calling dispatch to run Plate and DL numbers, just look at it and data bounces back.
7)walking gait recog ID of perps even in a crowd. Get video off some CCTV of some guy in a hoodie then Goggles automatically flag his ape-like shuffle in a crowd.

Probably gonna be a big stinky new law about us Little People driving while every cop has one and depts are racking up crashes with cops watching porn, but oh well.

I've already got my car rigged so I can watch movies on small tablet during commutes.

Having retired from Apple I feel I can say that personally I think that they're pretty dumb for the average user. People already have their nose stuck in their phone and have receded from society more than they should.

This will just accelerate that when it becomes more cost friendly. I am an Apple hardware fan but definitely not those for me. Too each their own I guess. Except the doofus that was using a pair on a New York subway might as well as taped a sign on his back that said "ROB ME".
