SSD usb drives on old computers

The box says Win10, I have older Windows. It also says usb-c, I only have ordinary usb. I have an adapter to usb-c that I use for charging stuff, would it work for using the disk? I don't care about full speed because I would just be using the disk for backing up. I'd actually be content with a thumb drive but I can't find any 1 tb thumb drives.

What model SSD did you get? I had to get an adapter too, but with WIN11 to use.. Ready to try it, all it can do is not work I assume, nothing hair pulling. Hopefully, my Crucial X9 PRO will go easy. Never done a back up before with an SSD.

    Good luck.

EDIT: Need a March 2009 join date next,

Amazon has a ton of 1 Tb thumb drives.

As to using your USB adapter you'd just have to try it. Some dont have all the pins connected as they are just used for charging. I keep one on my desk I want to say came with an NVMe to USB device and it works for data but I couldnt tell you who made it as theres no markings. I'd say the majority of USB storage devices *should* be backwards comparable (all that I have tried have worked) but that doesn't mean yours will work. Depends on the controller in it. The adapters are 5 or 6 bucks for a multipack on Amazon so worth a try.

The bad thing about "try it" is I'm stuck with it if it doesn't work.

BTW, are "SSD drives" more reliable than "thumb drives"? They're bigger and more expensive, what other differences are there?

In general yes, SSDs are significantly more reliable than thumb drives. They have built in redundancies and are made to a higher spec. They still do go bad so don?t expect them to be immortal. Thumb drives are generally meant to be disposable unless you pay a huge amount of money for some DOD standard type device.

The rule for backing up is that something isn?t backed up unless you have at least 3 copes of it with one being offsite.

When I ran an IT department we also had backups on a different type of device with a different type of media. Our disks were not sealed and could become contaminated, which could damage the device, which in turn could damage other media. If all media were the same type you could potentially lose every disk you had.

Yup thats the right way to do it. We even still dump to tape and have a company like Iron Mountain take it every day.
