Yeah, its a version of Linux. WTF else could it be?
Proving yet again the the combined brain-power of over a billion CCP drones after generations of complete access to all Western Universities and their government making it a top priority ready to confer top status, pay and security for any success is at best only able to rebrand what one or two bright hacker kids did decades ago. However, I'm enthused and have been saying this was needed for some time-for some "State actor" to through its weight behind ANY "new" non-Windows, non-Apple hopefully Open Source OS, to create an Open Source OS that due to enforced customer base will become user friendly and actually work without giving you headaches.
Bill Gates became suddenly the richest man in the world not by selling great or even good software, just software that is plug and play and actually works without needing to invest untold hours on the knottiest points of "back end" computing.
Hopefully what will happen is Red China will do similar to what made Windows the default in USA....once it becomes default system for government offices that creates critical mass and everything flows from there. No reason Red China can't hire a few top talent Western programmers to smooth and polish the "new" OS to make it to Apple or Windows level of plug and play, but without even the many annoying "Do you accept lic agreement?" when setting up. WFH is here to stay, and I've never understood why "high tech"(WWW based software dev) would be an industry centered on expensive and downright problematic Silicon Valley and SF real estate.
Decades ago, there was some Brazilian effort to force a domestic computer industry that only make really bad computers very, very expensive in Brazil and completely failed and backfired, and kept Brazilians from learning basics.
IMO the Chinese are on the right track. They aren't saying other systems will be kept out of the nation, just piggybacking and throwing state support behind an OS that many experts say is great, just a bit rough and quirky for most users.
Being as its Open Source, in theory it can't be Spyware. Hopefully the CCP will do Smart Phone OS next. Maybe even automobile computer brains Open Source OS.
I was thinking other State actors such as Japan, France, Russia, India or even South Korea might be able to dictate a "new" OS by making it default for their government offices, but China makes most sense because they actually make the computers, have by far the biggest user base and will be immune from any pesky Lawfare or political pressure, and have a very obedient cadre of government and non-government computer users. My spies and official US based reports tell me CCP was able to almost instantly end software "piracy" in China just by issuing an edict and "policy change" and little to none of the messy side of "enforcement". That tells me that if Pooh Bear tells his billion minions that in 3 months they will be switching to new Chinese open source OS, that is what they will do.
