    Chromebooks Costing Schools Billions

School districts are regretting that they bought millions of Chromebooks at the start of the pandemic. Now support is ending for those Chromebooks which means no more updates. Makers of Chromebooks don't sell spare parts and discourage repairing them.

Don't buy a Chromebook unless you are OK with it only being good for 3-4 years.

Some politicians and Union Turds got rich on the deal. Thats all that matters.

In my kids Jordan School District, elementary students leave the Chromebook at school overnight for charging. One isn't really assigned to them.
In middle school, my son was given a brand new Chromebook, which he takes home and keeps at home through the summer. Right now it's just sitting.
They're fairly sturdy. The district eventually auctions them off in their public auctions.

But, yes, it's gotta be a tremendous cost. I guess they feel technology is necessary this day and age.

A big reason for jumps in my property tax.!

they are cheaper than ipads or real computers and they are easier to use... sadly yes, they have a shorter shelf life but trust me the crap most districts buy are obsolete in 2-3 years anyway. Only in 2021 they got computers with 16gb at lausd, most were 8GB.

Also there is alternatives to refresh them with linux or neverware since most admins are too stupid to understand the value of using a tech for 10-15 hrs to put in the work.

Its good they auction them off, most districts just send them to recycle, and no tech is not that important for learning.

My school district was the first to start a one to one with Samsung CB's when they first came out a few years before the plandemic. Now we use Dell's and go though hundreds of the them throughout the year.

Chrome books are great at $129 and last two three years just fine. I’m on my third one now, touch screen, can flip it in tablet mode, and was like $299 on a Black Friday kind of thing several years ago. My first was just 129 and was all I wanted to spend. Some folks don’t need more then a word processor and a browser.

They don't require a high end computer to use the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

But as with all other disposable tech, buying a more expensive computer to last a few more years doesn't work out economically either and isn't really needed. Most computers sit idle or use less than 10% of the CPU usage when it isn't running a system scan.

I'd think a dumbed down 'puter like Chromebook might make sense for.....???

but the main thingy about 'puters is learning curve and just getting past a few hurdlers the first time, and that should NOT be an issue when the whole class gets the exact same unit and you can walk everyone through at one time and if anyone misses something there will be dozens of fellows able to show them, etc.

And if its about LEARNING WTF not learn on a "real" computer, like something they might use at work or if they get past the 4th grade?

Yeah, figures that for $10,000+ per year, per student, the School Admin would go "lowest possible bidder" on their main "learning tool".

Why do I know the Schools all spent 2x the cost of the Chromebooks making sure they were "locked down" so kids couldn't access any non-approved political websites.

How much would they save if it was macs and the repair bills on those can cost up to a few chrome books?
