Honestly, I've never used the ISP provided emails.

Gmail is free, fairly reliable, and works great. Their UI is fairly intuitive to even the most technologically inept person. Though I prefer a custom domain + hosted on Microsoft Outlook; but that's a whole another situation.

Yahoo Mail is also great but I'm not a fan of their ads all over their mail site.

Proton mail if you want to keep things very private.

I'd second Proton mail or Tutanota both protect your privacy to some extend.
I would never use gmail or yahoo.
Or get your own domain, it can be hosted on Proton or Tutanota, but you will have to pay.

I switched over to gmx.com several years ago and I've been happy with it. The website and app interface is very outdated and has ads but it works for me bc I use my email integrated in my mac and iPhone in the mail app.

+1 for Proton Mail. Solid apps and integration with Outlook or Thunderbird email clients...and encrypted if the email originated and terminates within their network.

They have a free offering, but if you want to use a local email client, or advanced features there is a premium.
They are a great email provider.

+1 for GMX - I used to use it religiously and only switched over to Gmail for the interface.

proton or zoho would be my choice. I use zoho as I host my own domain.

                        Proton mail over Tor.

I’ve been on Zoho for several years now. Email, doc storage etc. It’s been great.

                            Thanks for the suggestions.
                            I signed up with Proton.
Did not ask for any of my info.
Just make a username and password.
Asked for text number if you want to be able to retrieve a lost password, bit not required.

If Proton screws up, no one would care. If Gmail screws up that's will hurt Google financial.
