    Samsung 980 Pro problem

New Z790 system. Win 11 installed on Samsung 980 PRO. Drive has latest firmware. Sitting at the desktop doing nothing. Pops a blue screen. Don't remember message. Reboot and no boot drive. Using a USB-C NVMe dock I connect drive to Win 10 system. Windows beeps but drive never shows up in Disk Manager. After several minutes a Format Drive box pops up.

What are the chances a data recovery place can get the data to a new drive? Don't really relish going through the whole Win 11, SQL, VS, Office, apps, etc install again. Anything else I could try?

Bad first time experience with NVMe drives.

I remember there being some issue with 980 PROs, but I cant remember if this was it or not. Yes to your question, a friend of mine was able to save most of his data from an early NVME that went bad, but its situational. The fact that it's not detected on another computer is not a good sign.

It doesn?t solve you current problem, but I create a duplicate drive weekly and also do nightly backups. It takes 10 minutes to swap drives.

Is the 980 Pro an existing drive that has been in use? If so and it had the bad firmware problem, it may have reach the point where the drive is no longer usable, in which case, retrieving any data would not be possible. You could contact a data recovery place and have them try, but no guarantees.

This was a new drive with up to date firmware. I was still in the process of setting it up. Had Win 11, SQL, VS, Office and a few selected apps installed. Starting over with another drive.

System has 3 other NVMe drives that got very heavy use while transferring data from old PC. The mobo heat sinks covering those drives got too hot to touch. Won’t be that heavily used again.

Bought drive from Amazon and have until 4/11 to return. Which I will.

Returning to Amazon was infinitely easier. New drive arrives today. Will drop dead one at Kohls tomorrow.

Interesting - and pain in the butt for sure. But I'd be worried about having personal/sensitive data on there before sending it back. Not really sure what I'd do if there was sensitive data on it! Probably destroy it. I had one die on me a few years ago. PC wouldn't boot, but fortunately, I only kept the OS on that drive.

                  1. 2 normal PCs could not mount the drive. I am sure Amazon is not going to give it to a data recovery place.

                  2. It was a clean Windows install. Nothing personal on it yet except product keys buried in the Registry.
