    Inherent SSD problem?

Seeing mentioned elsewhere that SSD have a data retention problem if they are not powered on once in awhile.

    Thoughts?

Haven't heard that. Which architecture was it referring to?

There are different types of SSD, but I have not heard about this issue.
I have been using SSDs as a main drive (OS drive) in building computers for about ten years, never had an issue or a negative experience. I have some old ones that I converted into USB storage, never lost any data.
Both USB and SSD use flash non-volatile memory, usually NAND type. SSD is more complicated and uses more sophisticated controllers, but both types retain data when power is disconnected.
If you can specify what you plan on using them for, you may get more specific answers.
The only reason to use HHD drives is for back up and storage, because they are cheaper and have higher storage capacity then SSD, for everything else SSD is king.

I have not run into a problem myself. It appears if a SSD is used as a backup then put away somewhere for months there may be a problem getting data off of it.

Here is a closer look at SSD architecture and the importance of the controller in allowing the SSD to function seamlessly with the host system.

MyOdessa pretty much asked the same question.

Search for ssd bit rot. That's what you are talking about.
