Critique of Micro Center Thumd Drives Needed.

    I've acquired 5 Micro Center thumb drives (64Gb 3.1).

Over the years I've mainly used San Disk and various no names from promotions. I've not had any real problems with any bought or otherwise. (All 2.0).

I know Micro Center has been around for years but looking on line, their thumb drive rating is hit and miss, as are most companies if you really look.

Those that have used Micro Centers drives if you have any feed back to share good, bad or ugly, it will be appreciated.

Yes, somewhere in the back of this old machine is a 3.0 port but never used.

    Thank you.

    Kyle

I agree with your hit or miss statement. I've had some that have lasted for years, others weeks. I have an old 1 or 2 gig that still works fine. Clear orange. I got it, I dunno like 15 years ago or something.

I haven't had a problem with them, which is why I started buying them almost exclusively.

Now, I do zero them out first, to make sure there's no malware or anything else bad on them, with either of the following commands. In these examples, the USB thumb drive shows up as /dev/sdc; use the correct identifier for how it shows up on your computer (might be /dev/sdd, /dev/sdb, /dev/sde, and so on).

      1.) cat /dev/zero > /dev/sdc
      2.) dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=1048576

Just let 'em go till they're done. Then, partition and format as normal. I've never had a problem.

BTW, they have a 512GB model now, and it isn't too expensive.

I haven't had any problems with them either, but a lot depends on what you are storing and why. If it's something mission critical for your business, making a second copy isn't a bad idea. The same is true if it will take you a ton of effort to duplicate the data. On the other hand if you are just transferring information from one computer to another or sharing information with someone else, that's likely a different matter.
