My old assumption was that SIM cards were just a way that cell carriers identified phones. This video was really eye opening for me. A SIM card is a full blown computer that talks independently to the cell carrier without the OS (Android/iOS ect.) even knowing. It is also a separate attack vector, especially for government level actors.
