What kind of budget are you working with? Prices are actually pretty good right now on laptops (surprisingly better than many desktops). Even an older one with a dedicated graphics card will generally perform better than one with a newer CPU but an integrated graphics chip.

As for Windows S mode, I can't think of a single good reason to use it.

I am big fan of multiple monitors and have been for years (decades) but at home, I am trying to figure out my next system now that I am coming up on retirement, I wont need that much screen space, I was thinking of curved monitor and about 36" wide (to fill new desk I want) so a 39 to 40" ultrawide, powered by either a windows or apple laptop. I really have no preference on operating systems, even be happy with Linux as I use all 3 at work anyway. Multiple monitors just cant be beat for productivity, but one big one with screen areas cordoned off to specific tasks should work well.

Yeah, it didn't sound good. Can't even install Firefox. Guess they had a segment of their customer base ask for it.

S mode only allows you to install software from the Microshaft Store. You can turn it off though, but once you do you can't go back (darn).

Here's the laptop I settled on, 300 bucks at Target. It was $250 at Walmart, but only on Black Friday. I thought the price would be good all weekend, a $50 mistake on my part.

It has an i3 cpu, 8 gb memory, 256g SSD, UHD graphics good for 4k resolution, an HDMI and a USB type C port so I can easily hook up lots of monitors. The main software I want to use only requires 8gb, but if it doesn't run well, I can get a 32g stick for less than a fortune.

If your hard drive is fast enough you can set the page file to use much higher amount of gb. This works best with m2 but sata is usually fast enough.
