Maybe look for something that’s more purpose built for alpine or ice climbing. Those packs tend to be narrower and allow more movement and range of nothing while wearing the pack.

Our Divide 1200 Hunting Day Pack in Ash has both organization & hydration with expanding pockets for tripod or additional storage. Get it online at KUIU.com.

Stick out too much: side-to-side or front-to-back?

That sounds like my travel backpack, an old Jansport Odyssey 38. So many pockets, I had to hang colored key id thingies on the zipper pulls.

I like the looks of the veto pro packs but I can’t afford them to try. Klein makes one too.
Post up what you get. I’m tired of my Swiss backpack and it sounds like you carry about what I do. I do carry my fiber stuff in a tactical sling bag…

I've had really good luck with the ebags bags on Amazon. They are sturdy and have strong zippers and seams. They have backpacks in different sizes, and they are a good value for the price.

I had a pretty low-pro flat laptop pack for years... still have it but it has some holes and wear spots now. BELKIN slim pack... not made anymore but they might make something similar. It had a lot of foam protection for the laptop unlike some new designs I have seen. Real comfortable straps, not at all tactical. Belkin makes good laptop packs from my sampling.

I can put 3 days worth of clothes, my diddy bag, laptop, iPad, bag-of-cables-and-accessories, spare glasses, couple of notebooks, misc. other bits in that pack and still have plenty of room to quickly shove all my 'pocket stuff' into the lid before going through TSA. The laptop compartment lies flat too, so generally you can just unzip it without actually taking your laptop out at security when traveling.

Plus, seemingly every bay area tech bro has one, so you grey man well. Also comes in a 25L, but I don't know if it has the zip down pouch for a laptop.

my fave at any price. I think I've got 3 currently. More pockets per pound/price/weight than anything else. I like to add 3mag USGI molle pouch for easy access to screw drivers, hand lotion, bug/suntan and glasses cases.

I've seen them around town as EDC/lunch, etc for working stiffs.

Only grips are flap (might cut it back someday) that covers zippers tends to get caught and if zippers are closed together at top of big compartments they will tend to self unzip a bit but they they have big sturdy loop pulls to secure with D-clip.

Zero defects/tears etc in all zippers/stitching so far with few years of daily as EDC lunch etc and daily hiking with beer.

Would I look at a diff more expensive pack if I planned to slide down mountains of sharp rocks for 18months in some remote region as an "Operator" unable to resupply? Maybe.

Kiui had a backpack sale a short time ago. Don't know if it is still on.

I have tried several different ones including 5.11 and others. I like my Maxpedition. I forgot which model but it was around $150 a couple of years ago.

For affordable but well-made tactical stuff... Voodoo and LAPG are decent.
