    Performance counter errors

This AM, I see the ERROR and WARNINGS below in my Event Viewer. (Win 7 Pro)

    (E) Installing the performance counter strings for service .NET CLR Networking 4.0.0.0 () failed. The first DWORD in the Data section contains the error code.

    (E) Installing the performance counter strings for service .NET Data Provider for Oracle () failed. The first DWORD in the Data section contains the error code.

    (W) Cannot repair performance counters for .NET Data Provider for Oracle service. Reinstall the performance counters manually using the LODCTR tool.
Of course I did the usual Google searches on how to fix and looked up the LODCTR tool. Since I don't play in the registry and my reading comprehension has dwindled over the years, I'm lost. I never found a downloadable tool.

When you use the System Monitor tool, some counters may be missing or don't contain counter data. The base set of performance counter libraries may become corrupted and may need to be rebuilt. Additionally, you may need to rebuild any custom (Microsoft .NET Framework application created) counters or any extensible counters.

This behavior may occur in the following situations:

    * certain extensible counters corrupt the registry.
*some Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)-based programs modify the registry.

The above link on manually restoring the counters as well as all the things that can go wrong in doing so is far above my knowledge in fixing this issue.

    Questions:

I know basically what the performance counters do but are they really necessary and can the error be ignored like so many other errors?

All references to the so called fix mention "server". I assume that applies to servers as well as a common PC?

If there is anyone in the Vista area that can do a hands on fix PM me, but info from anyone is appreciated.

    Respectfully
    Kyle

What Oracle software is installed? Can it simply be reinstalled?

To my knowledge nothing. Custom build in 2011 and nothing Oracle that I'm aware of. (I did not build it).

What would be an example of Oracle related program?

Java would be an example of an Oracle product that is likely installed on your PC.

In addition, it may be an error specific to a single build of said software and may be corrected in the next release.

Also note that the Java end user JVM is obsolete software with Java SE no longer supporting applets or the browser plug-in, so unless you are running Java apps locally, should be uninstalled.

I think Java was deleted long ago, don't see any signs of it.

            Thanks all for the responses.

Odd though, Load Perf usually appears in the Event View on every boot/reboot only. This AM, it showed up as errors at 03:xx hrs. and not on a boot/reboot.

            Again thanks.

VirtualBox is another common Oracle-related program that you might have.

Nope, no virtual anything. I looked at the programs loaded, 52, and most of those are with their various drivers, options and drivers:

                Adobe Reader (Flash) (Adobe Corp)

                Epson (Seiko Corp)

                ESET (ESET) Problematic antivirus

                Nvidia (Nvidia) Video card

                LG DVD's (CyberLink)

                Logitec (Mouse/Key Brd.

                Mozilla (FoxFire) No add ons.

                Ethernet (RealTec)

Google Chrome (never used or set up)

No new programs and the latest updates are Firefox (5/8), MicroSoft AV (5/7), and MicroSoft Edge (5/7)

                2.02 Gb installed
                I really appreciate the feedback.

Gotta keep this ole dog running as long as possible

Okay. So far no BSOD. If you don't see me on Calguns at 03:30 in the AM, things went south.

I'm backing up files to DVD just in case. I back up to an internal secondary drive often too (manually, not mirrored; that 'broke' years ago, so I go primitive on that).

                    Thanks for your input...

Performance counters are instrumented calls that keep statistics about what the software is doing relative to the system it is on.

In most day to day user operations, performance counters are meaningless and might be used solely by some obscure callback in a program that needs to ratio some resource depending on current usage. Not having that data may affect behavior, but the errors you are seeing are solely due to .NET failing to load ADO drivers for Oracle databases. Unless you are running Oracle, there is zero impact.

As to why the modules failed to load, in the description that you gave, it points out that counters and the registry values they hold can become corrupted. Using the supplied tool to reinitialize them is possible, but sounds like a poor excuse for a data gathering tool, to begin with, so personally would write it off and shut it down.

You could possibly reinstall the .NET runtime and see if the errors go away.

Thanks Robotron. For the time being I'll just ignore the errors. So far I have not had issues with any program.

At this point, I think trying to "fix" the issue may cause more grief than not.

                        Really appreciate the input.

If you had Java installed previously, do you still have the bundled Java updater loading?

Not that I can tell. I don't see any indication of Java anywhere. Other updaters are indicated in the Event Viewer, but nothing Java related that I can see.

                            Thank you for the suggestion.
