Windows 10 Update Help for Geezer

The older I get the harder it is for me to understand what Microsoft is doing with the updates and their dropping support for earlier versions.

There is a current May update for my Windows 10 but imbedded in all of the rhetoric is language that says after May 10 the security measures will no longer be compatible. It also says my PC is not compatible with upgrade to Windows 11 and I am not sure if there is a cost associated with updating.

Originally, my machine was a Windows 8 that I bought as a remanufactured unit through Amazon with Windows 10 installed. It has Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4170 CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz and 8 MB RAM so I am not sure what is needed for Windows 11.

Anyway, I just need to know if I can install the latest update and what will happen after May 10 with my Windows 10 support.

It sucks getting old and losing touch with tech reality

Windows is now forcing updates. Don't choose win 11

Microsoft wants to track everything and requires a "free" account.

So everything done on the PC can be tracked by Microsoft.

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Windows 10 is supported until 2025, so I believe that you are on an early version of W10 which may no longer be supported. You should update to the latest version and you should be OK.
There is no cost of upgrading to W11 but you would have to bypass the stop in the system that would prevent you to upgrade, so in your case, I would not suggest it as it is not automatic (and also Microsoft is not promising that you would be able to update W11 in future, if you bypass the system).

Share your pc's drive with a Linux. Some of the distributions are as easy as Windows to navigate, and can turn an old computer into something snappy again.

That is so true. I'm currently running Kubuntu Linux (Ubuntu with the KDE desktop, looks kinda like Microsoft Windows). It "just works" and does everything that I need.

Another option is Debian GNU/Linux, using the LXQt desktop. I made just such a PC for some older neighbors, and it looks enough like Microsoft Windows that they find it easy to use. The PC was one of my older ones, about 7 years old, with 16GB of DRAM. Again, it "just works", and it's snappy enough even for me (I'm a computer systems engineer), so it's definitely snappy enough for them.

If you're doing the installation yourself, I would recommend either Lubuntu or Kubuntu, because the Ubuntu flavours are rather easier to install.

The only minor issue that I'm having with Ubuntu distros, is the daily update downloads for things I know nothing about. I just accept the default setting of accepting 'all', as they usually take less than a minute.

That's actually a very good thing, because the vast majority of those daily update downloads are security updates. You want those. This is an example of the Free/Open Source Software maxim of, "given enough eyes, all bugs are shallow." My Kubuntu box does the same thing, and I always accept "all", like you do.
