    WD has a disk diagnostics tool called Data Lifeguard. You can format it with that.

      i can format it with erd commander as well. problem is i know something is on the disks and want to see and recover anything that is important before blowing it all away.

        Download and burn a DVD with a "live" linux image, and then reboot to that DVD. Doesn't touch your HD but will give you a running linux OS to work with.
