    UPS - no power today

So I had a scheduled power outage today

    I have 2 UPS
    One larger wattage -1600
    One smaller -1300

The 1300 held up better than I expected.

I'm wondering if the larger inverter eats that much more power?

I just ran the cable modem and router for Wifi.

I had an older unit. It has a single 8 AH battery and the larger both have 2 batteries.

I'm now wondering if I hooked the batteries up in parallel to keep the 12 volt DC current, would I get more run time with the small single UPS as it has a much smaller inverter. Just hook the batteries outside of the case.

The batteries go bad over time. They last a few years.

The bigger battery will work, but if you run at max power it could overheat. It may be engineered to not overheat with the included battery. Bigger battery means longer run time and there is more time for the heat to build.

I've done it, but I was also sure to only run it at about a third of capacity.

As stated above, the batteries typically have a fairly short lifespan. In all honesty, UPS’ are intended for brief outages, or for longer outages they are supposed to allow one to gracefully shut down their devices before the piano drop.

I have 4 new 8 amp hour batteries.

32 amp hour should have run the wifi and modem a lot longer than it did.

I think the inverters / 1600 watt max eats battery life.

I want enough for 2-3 days. Need to rethink things.

Good for a real world test.

Neighbor has an 80 ah battery / solar generator

He found out the windows don't let him run solar inside. Cords are too short to set panels outside.

          Test runs are needed

As stated, a consumer UPS is designed for very limited use. An hour? Maybe less. Just enough time to finish what you are doing and gracefully power down. You need power generation and a solar cell will likely need to be very large to work for you.

Get a fuel generator and a very large tank. I forget the burn rate, but perhaps a gallon per hour?

If you just want a massive UPS, you can do it. I used the site above and found 1000watts for 72 hours will run you $60K.

Yup. A month or so ago I just spent around 15k to keep ~1500watts up for around 4 hours... This stuff ain't cheap.

You can also go buy a bunch of car batteries and wire them up in parallel to get more capacity. The modules in these things are just banks of a bunch of 12V lead acid batteries. Or spend a lot of money on lithiums...

A honda generator will be cheaper.

I have a UPS for modem and wifi that's rated for 30 minutes. The UPS draws 25 watts per hour according to a Killawatt. I have two Maxoak Bluetti EB240 "solar generators" for power and a 720 watt solar array. I use one and charge one if there is enough sun. Keeps most household appliances running for several days. Won't run the air conditioner.

This setup is about 2.5X the price of a Honda 2200i.
