It’s a proxying application firewall, probably running a combination of pihole and privoxy, and their bespoke application firewall suite.

Could be a good buy if it works as advertised, and doesn’t spy on you. However, you might take a hit on performance and throughput.

There are plenty of free-software suites that can do the same thing, and are vettable, non-blackbox, but not at that price point, when you consider the device it has to run on, and the likely power consumption.

The ongoing $60 / yr. subscription cost is a bit annoying, though, and may tip the balance in favor of your own device after a period of three years.

They also mention that the functionality is exactly the same as the AI protection that ships with Asus routers, so there is at least one other option if you don’t want an extra device on your network.

Get a Raspberry Pi zero and run Pi-Hole on it. That should do what you want for about $20.

I run a pi-hole at home to block ads and telemetry on all network devices. You could also use NextDNS for free.
For NextDNS, all you have to do is create an account and configure what you want to block on their site, then change your DNS settings on your home router to point to the NextDNS servers.

This is what I would recommend, but I run mine in an ubuntu VM.

I think Raspberry Pi's have "appreciated" in cost lately and availability is scarce.

This caused me to check my ASUS router and it is one of the models that comes with this functionality. The feature requires that you share some information with Trend Micro with the provision that you can withdraw permission. However, there is a warning that if you withdraw permission the feature may not work.

Just checked to se if AI protection on my ASUS router had blocked anything. It had. It blocked access to thewethersiren.com.

This will work okay for a small network though better performance can be found elsewhere. When in stock the Zero v1.3 can be found for $5 while the W version is $10. If you have an unused Chromecast Ultra the power plug can be used to provide ethernet and power over micro USB.
