looking into a new laptop but...

i've seen a lot of the newer laptops with something called eMMC storage and it's usually pretty low, in the range of 32GB or less

i don't understand what i'd be getting here - 32GB is definitely not enough IMHO and i don't know what eMMC is?

from the little i've read i can't even replace it with an SSD drive (that's what im looking for) because the eMMC drive is soldered into the motherboard

    am i missing something here?

thx for the help, not as computer literate as i should be

    Older technology than SSD.

Getting the right storage made a huge difference to your experience back when eMMC was the norm.

Depends on what you want to do with it.

My kitchen table laptop for reading email, surfing the web, has 32GB of memory. If I need more I can attach an SSD - recently bought a 2 TB Sandisk SSD for under $100. Connects by USB. I save videos, bigger files on the Sandisk and use it between the kitchen laptop and my desktop.

My desktop is bigger, better, faster and has a more expensive graphics card that'll run just about anything. AND it was a gift from my son. God bless that boy.

If 32gb of emmc lets you surf, watch videos, check email, check calguns, maybe it's worth it if that's what you wanna do. YMMV.

If you're finding them with emmc, you're probably liking at Chromebooks. As said above, fine for browsing the internet, email, basic word processing. I wouldn't get anything with emmc for a windows laptop.

i have a 1TB external drive if needed and the laptop would only be used for viewing stuff i don't download very much, maybe PacMan online or Chess

could be a decent little buy especially at the price right now - don't need a sh** ton of speed but it would be internet connected

one thing i don't know is how much space the OS takes up - what i'd be left with?

You're not missing anything. eMMC is for computers that do most things from "the Cloud". Most are junk. Just spend the duckets, and get something with a real SSD.

I would recommend getting something with a fast SSD and real specs starting about $400 nowadays. I picked one up not too long ago that was not too bad for basic stuff...Lenovo Ideapad 3 15.6" Touch Screen Laptop - Intel Core i3 - 8GB Memory - 256GB SSD - $430 IIRC. If you want something really fast that can do anything, I would look at something like a Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 or 15.
