    Budget Graphics Card Needed

I need a graphics card to test with on a desktop computer. It needs to have some minimum capability of PCI 3.0 x16 (I think). The computer is new but arrived with some hardware troubles and I think it's a damaged GC.

The processor is a an AMD Ryzen 9 5800x
Motherboard is an Asus Prime X570-Pro

Looking for something cheap that will get me booted into Windows 10. The onboard graphics port won't work because the processor doesn't have integrated graphics. I don't want to use high performance card (yet) because I don't know if it's a motherboard problem and I don't want to risk damaging an expensive GC.

    Suggestions?

The problem I've had with el-cheapo amazon cards it compatibility issues meaning even with one of those and it doesn't work, it could be the card is FUBAR

why not make this the desktop vendors problem?

Without getting too deep into this discussion, it is the vendor's/shipper's problem. I might end up with the DOA desktop for free, UPS has approved the damage claim.

I'm not necessarily looking for el-cheapo, just something basic that won't cost a ton to test with. I'll upgrade the card once i determine there is no motherboard/processor problems. If there is a reliable el-cheapo I'd also consider it.

Would this be OK to test with?

For testing anything pcie is ok. Pcie is backwards compatible. I used a old 8800gt nvidia till i found my rtx 3070. What problems are you having? Your board is capable of pcie gen 4 but is backwards compatible i used to daily a r290 radeon that pulled off 1440 not well lol

Oh read back yep your cpu doesnt have dedicated apu. Hard to tell you what card to get for now. Careful with amazon people sell cards as one type like 1660 but they end up being way weaker with custom bios that dont work right. And in this market cards hurt
I got my 3070 for 499 retail from best buy but it took weeks of constant checking. Keep your head up and be careful lot of scammers out there brother

Yeah, that's what I thought also.

              Here's where I'm at:

Computer arrived with loose bits of plastic inside. Immediately I noticed stuff rattling around inside. Took the cover off to find plastic bits. I tried to recover as many as possible, rotated the case around to check for more but it sounded like nothing more was in it.

On startup, the computer goes past the initial BIOS checks, when the ASUS boot screen comes up suddenly it freezes and the screen covers with lavender dots or stripes.

I can get to the BIOS menus, and recovery environment (hit or miss) but that's about all. I have tried using recovery environment to re-install Win-10 but I get the same problem when it tries to fully boot the OS (while configuring).

I did try removing the graphics card, booting with no card and onboard video. Doesn't work.

Also tried installing a very old PCIe video card from a 2010 era desktop. The card fit the socket but it would not give any video output, not even the boot BIOS screen.

I tried booting with a Linux Mint 20.2 drive key, but the Boot loader won't recognize the drive key. I've booted this drive key from other computers with no problem but it won't show up in the boot selection menu on the new desktop.

At this point the only two options I can think of are to try a different video card, or try booting from the M.2 SSD that's in my older desktop (Ryzen 9 3500x). That computer has a slightly different board (ASUS TUF-Gaming) and the 3-series Ryzen. I REALLY don't want to pull the graphics card from that unit to test with (AMD 5700XT).

Still waiting to hear from the vendor regarding the refund. It's been a rough week dealing with them and UPS, hopefully they will process the claim quickly.

              OH, BTW:

Current card is an EVGA RTX-3060 TI XC which is PCIe 4.0

ASUS motherboard manual has the following page, does this mean PCIe 4.0 is -required- for 3'rd (& 4'th) generation Ryzen processors?

I've got some old cards, most likely PCI 2.0. I could send you one for free. PM if interested.

                  Thank you for the offer!

I ended up shipping the unit back. The vendor never followed through with the damage claim, I think they were just trying to wait out the '30 day return policy'. We ended up deciding to ship back at our expense to make sure we were refunded. If I can't recover shipping fees it will cost me about 10% of the purchase price, which sucks, but is better than ending up with a DOA machine at full price.

I used to keep a couple PCI video cards around for similar reason... testing, but since I don't do PC work for people at home anymore, I have been eWasting like a futher-mukher...

Yeah, I tried putting an older PCI card in it, PCI 2.0 IIRC but it wouldn't even give me a BIOS screen. That's why I'm wondering if AMD Ryzen 3'd gen and above require PCI 4.0 cards.

have you put that RTX 3060 in another machine and tested it?
