    Replacement tablet insight....**UPDATE**

    ****UPDATE****

Decided to give it a try. After driving to the Costco in Fontana I picked up one of the Tab A 8in 32 gig. Comes with the free 32gig MicroSD in the box. Very well packed. After initial set up and the android update, I loaded up all my apps.

It DOES have stand alone GPS!!!!!!! I am happy! Took it for a drive and up spot on! You do need to load up the apps and let the local maps down load. They everything is working great. Even the Giaa GPS that would no longer work on the older tablet is BACK!

It IS micro USB charging and comes with standard Samsung charging block. The total cost was $111.74 after tax and California (BS) "electronic recycling fee".

I have a Dell Venue 7 that has served me really well in the Jeep as a information/GPS/map/music player when out on the trail as it has GPS without the need for Wifi (Does only have 2.4 wifi). Many of my apps trying to update, the device no longer supports the new app; or apps no longer support the older device, and it seems some function is being lost in the current apps. Here is what I do with it:

Costco has a deal coming up starting the 14th of a Samsung Galaxy A 8in, 32gig with a 32gig MicroSD included for $99.99.

Am I reading through the specs on the site correctly that this Samsung tablet has GPS as well? I don't see GPS listed on the packaging... However, its one of those take to register cards... but shows GPS on the spec site.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8in Specs

A $100 bucks for a Samsung that appears that it will do what I need it to and an update vs my Dell Venue 7. Even if the Samsung does appear to be a 2019..? I get that Android P is Pie? I am not finding clear answer online if the GPS DOES work as a stand alone.

I DID see one review from Walmart site that they posted it worked to navigate them home after a day out.

i've had this tablet before and the larger 10" version later for me and my kid. works just fine. but it is not standalone gps, not for that price. you'll have to tether off the mobile and use mobile data. f

for day to day use, it works fine. though your need is more for automobile. unless the mobile phone is too small and you just need something bigger, might be best to avoid. i believe there are versions (that i remember in the past) that are mobile data ready but you have to get another line or so iirc for that device. tethering might your best bet if you want to just have a bigger screen.

this is what the manual says from the link you shared:

Location services use a combination of GPS, mobile network and Wi-Fi to determine the location of your device.

Cell service is not available in a lot of on the trails and would prefer to have to be stuck tethering to the cell phone for the GPS.

I've found a few more "questioned asked" on Best buy that shows the GPS works without wife.. then one random reply under that question also says Its not refurbished... LOL

      And this from Amazon:

I guess I could give it a go at Costco and with the easy 90 day return policy I could just return it if it doesnt work..

My wife just got one of these in the last month or so, and @ $99, not-tea-bag:

32gb eMMC, 2GHz proc, 2GB RAM, 802.11AC 2.4 & 5GHz bands unlike N which might not have 5GHz, MicroSD slot (1-2TB max card size supported).

I like the 7-8" tablets, as they typically fit in a back jeans pocket.

Faster than my LG tablet, which I spent ~$150 on, and still goes for that price.
