    You already stated the two best improvements you could make, SSD and ram.
    Samsung SSDs tend to be reliable and fast, but there may be other manufacturers depending on size. Find out how much ram your motherboard will take and max it out if the cost is reasonable.

      I was thinking 50 ft of waterproof rope so he could use it as a boat anchor. Actually a 7 year old computer will still do everything it was built to do. Just not much of what a new computer can do.

        Not everybody is a gamer or a power user and his current unit has a decent CPU. An SSD will speed things up considerably and with a 16MB RAM (although I think it should be capable of more than 16MB) it will run well enough for a lot of folks and should be only around $200 to upgrade with 1TB SSD. If he were a power user or a gamer then you are correct, a new computer would be the answer.
