    Monitor repair

So I have an old 22" Asus LCD monitor that started giving me issues. I had it set to go to sleep after 10 min. In the mornings when I would wake it up, it would make a faint hissing sound for about 2 seconds and took about 1 full minute for it get fully bright. The other morning when I woke the monitor up, it turned on for a split second and then off. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it worked.

I already replaced the monitor with a new Acer monitor, but I still would like to fix the bad one and give it to someone. I looked at a bunch of videos and most videos show that the capacitors are usually the culprit of such problems. I took the monitor apart and the capacitors on the power supply board look good. No bulging as far as I can see. Should I still replace the caps even though none of them are bulging? Anything else I should look at?

If the monitor you're trying to fix is of an age of more than a few years or more, recycle it.
Why spend time and money for no gain, other than to help someone who wants something new?

Check all the solder. First try a new power cord.

        When you can get a NEW 27-28" @ $150, I wouldn't bother trying to fix a 22".
Better yet, get 1 more of the same size, as dual screens, or even tripple are MORE of a joy to work with.

Windows supports 254 monitors MAX, last I read...

This reminds me, when I was working as a tech for a consultant, a guy wanted to run 1 computer so a lady could bring up something, and another computer to copy the data to, manually, by typing it... We recommended dual screens instead... ... ...

          Does that monitor have backlight?

When it’s on but dark, if you hold a bright flashlight against the screen is any text visible?

          As others said - recycle

Costco had an off brand 4K 55” tv for $249 last week

Check the capacitors for bulging. If that is it then it is a quick cheap fix.

Those older monitors were illuminated with fluorescent tubes. The fluorescent tubes are probably worn out.

That was my guess as well.

I used to fix monitors at work for people, they didn't want them fixed. They wanted new. Saying that, I fixed my 7-9 year old Toshiba 46"LCD TV and gave it to my son. It really wasn't worth fixing when you can get a 55" LED TV at Costco for less than $350. But I'm an old ex-electronics tech so it was more of a challenge than anything else.
