    Upgraded to a WiFi Thermostat...

I said I'd never do it, but...
Went to check my thermostat that came with the house for a C wire, and snapped the mount...

Well, it was Saturday, I was up, the family was asleep, so I checked Lowe's for WiFi thermostats. Went in, none of the model I wanted on the shelf, went up front they handed me one that looked opened, w/out wrapped parts. I asked if they had any new, and the web site said they had 6 avail, and they lady said they might be in the cabinet she couldn't get in as she didn't have a key...

Opened the box to install, got all the wires term'd, and realized there was paint on the thermostat, and the term-block base. Looked at the buttons on the thermostat, and it was not even the same model pictured on the box. Someone returned their old thermostat, and go the WiFi one free! Went back, let them know they were swindled, and there was paint on the base and thermostat.

By this time they had access to the other cabinet, and gave me a NIB of the model I wanted.

Kind of a pain browsing to the Thermostat to get her WiFi programmed, but working well and happy with the product.

Big brother can now watch and lick my network... I probably should have put it on a dedicated Guest with no LAN access, but hindsight it 20/20, maybe I'll do that later.
EDIT: MAYBE I'LL DO THAT TONIGHT... w/no INTRANET access. Only works on 2.4GHz.

Same venue (but all new) LiftMaster garage door opener with WiFi link. Can do all kinds of things via my iPhone, set a time of day to close the door without asking, UPS can pop the door, drop delivery and close it- all the while sending me a text my package has been delivered.

It's spooky dead quiet (belt drive), unbelievably so. Not so sure I like that part v. knowing when it opens/closes by ear- but I set the app to notify me when it does either so I'm good.

        DONE...

Anyways, it was well worth the ~$100 price tag, after tax, as I got a Vet discount.

          UPDATE:
I was very unhappy with the response times when the app was set to a change, sometimes MINUTES,
and many times it would say it wasn't able to open COMMs with the Thermostat, complete BS,
as I NEVER really lose an Internet connection:

I bitched on the Playstore about the app and Thermostat lagging, and 50% of the time it said it was disconnected,
and w/in 2 days <25 second response times when changing anything via app or web site... ever since.

Public call-outs sometimes required in getting sh!+ fixed, if they want to sell more of this product...

I decided to portscan this trash from my local net:
          nmap -p1-65535 <local IP of Thermostat>

          All ports filtered...
Now I wonder if I factory reset it, if I could hit any ports other than 80 and 443 (which I recall it MIGHT redirect to SSL)

          nmap -O <local IP of Thermostat>

          Not correct OS Guess...

"Residio"(?) (Formerly Honeywell Home) is rock-solid now.

I Heard you the first time...

My mother got the Nest, GRATIS from Edison, I think... So did the mother in law...
BOTH had Edison auto-shut off their air at Heavy-Usage times...

              Custom Firmware, I assume?

I thought my ecobee died last week but it was just the 24v transformer in the air handler that gave up. Thankfully I had a replacement in the garage (because who doesn't keep spare 24v transformers in their garage like some kind of primitive loser? )

I've never burned one out either, but we used to stock alot of them at the Home Depot I worked at, and they sold at a pretty good pace.

I have a Honeywell which is nice. Especially on cold winter mornings. Makes one lazy as there is no reason to get out from under the covers to turn the heat on.

Yeah it was weird. It had barely 12v coming out of it testing right on the terminals. Testing on the wires at the thermostat it only had like 500mv. Probably condensation corroded it internally or something I dunno. I believe it was installed in 2012.

What the Gurgler search results say about doorbell transformer longevity:
"A basic low-tech doorbell that consists of a bell button, a transformer, wiring, and a bell mechanism can be expect to last about 40 years."
                          Wow!

Mine came with the house, built ~2005, my mother lived in 3 houses that I recall, but never burned one out. I honestly never heard of anyone's doorbell power transformer being replaced.

                          I guess you rolled a natural "1" on this house... ... ...
