Want to replace the RING cameras

Ring cameras have failed yet again. Evey time I find something going on.. The images just aren't there (poor camera timing/not enough time) or worst yet. nothing at all.

Want to replace these RING cameras with a product that actually works as it suppose to.

Would ideally like 4 cameras without hard wiring them. (if that's even possible for something that works)

Any thoughts on this from members ?

We set up the Ring doorbell and 3 exterior flood light/cams at my moms house. THEY. ARE. TERRIBLE!!!
Not sure why, but there is awful lag, sometimes up to 2 minutes. They are all hardwired to electricity too. She has very strong wifi and fast speeds. Ring doorbell and cams aren't that far away either. Some are within a few feet on the other side of the wall from the wifi.

I have the Nest doorbell and outdoor IQ cameras. While they are extremely reliable and I get the feed within 10-15 seconds, the delay is still noticeable and IMHO not truly up to snuff.

I would strongly suggest a hard wired NOT wifi system for true instant notifications with dedicated video monitors.

No substitute for wiring... I’ve got a Ring and 5 Arlo wireless cameras and they are all marginally useful.

I’ve also got a Swan setup, as the others weren’t making the cut, but if I were to do it again I would have just gone with a Lorex wired setup and called it a day.

Try the Blink XT2. They are very impressive. I have ring, blink, off brand and a security system camera.

I have a Swan DVR with wired 1080p cameras. During the day the quality is really good, but at night, the picture quality is marginal. But I have captured some decent images. Nice thing too is, there's no subscription costs and all the data is stored in my house.

Any battery operated camera is not going to have pre-roll, and it sounds like that is what your biggest complaint is. So accept now that if you want to know what happened, you will need at minimum hard wired power.

All the battery Ring cams have crap PIR (passive infrared) motion detection and no pre-roll. The hard power Ring cams have intelligent pixel based motion and pre-roll. This is the same trade-off for every other brand of camera too.

Proper motion detection requires constant power and processing. And pre-roll means the camera must always be recording, which is a power suck. So right off the bat, you want hard power - and then you will not miss anything. Once you have hard power, most cams are always recording, and the motion is just used for event tagging and alerts and maybe cloud uploads. But if the cam has local storage in addition to cloud storage, you will be able to review non stop video of any length before and after a motion event.

I had a cheap MIC DVR setup which after replacing another one prior to that. I ended up going to Ring because the it's easier to setup and expand (no wiring).

If you have wifi connectivity issues, that's probably because you're not factoring in signal going through exterior walls which have insulation and other materials that will degrade radio waves.

I have a second AP in my garage that points out the front of the home, so that's why I have no issues with my Ring cameras.

Wired is definitely better in terms of lag and connection reliability. But I was able to get Ring work how I need it to.

I have the NEST and like the quality of the video, the interface, and the look of the hardware. I would concur with the ocabj’s post above that you should factor signal strength through external walls as it does degrade significantly.

The NEST also records continuously so I am forced to record at a lower bandwidth or I will have overage fees from Comcast...

As with most things, you get what you pay for.

The best cameras and recorders use internet protocol over Cat 5 ethernet wire. Install it once and be done with it.

About 5 years ago I bought Swann systems for two locations. It is still OK at one location, but I recently replaced the other one with an AvertX system from Costco. 4K cameras and it is a world of difference. I think you can only order it through the Costco website. It is expensive, but the difference is that I am not a camera specialist. With Swann, I would call for tech support and after waiting hours on the phone get someone who spoke English as his 3 rd language.

With AvertX, I call and get a helpful person who is a native English speaker somewhere near Seattle. They are patient and helpful and I have never had a problem they could not solve.

Essentially I could either spend a little on a professional grade security system and then be at the mercy of a technician I had to hire. or I could spend more and get good tech support.

Arlo Pro 2 has been solid.

I have a Arlo System that has worked well for our situation. It started as a couple camera system for my Condo where wiring wasn't an option due to HOA considerations. Expanded to a four camera system now. High action camera's like the driveway that also capture the street in front are hooked to solar panel, so they recharge during the day. I have been very happy with my particular setup for what it's worth. I have had to replace one of the solar panel cables once in about 4 years, everything else has been solid and Netgear replaced the cable for free for what it is worth.
