Unless you're willing to go refurb, or used, not much for $400. I would avoid a ChromeBook. Not much better than a phone. The HP15, is a budget model laptop. It'll come with a 1tb mechanical drive, and 4gb/ram. However, upgrading to an SSD, and adding ram, fortunately, is pretty easy. The Dell you mentioned, is a little better, but will probably take you out of your budget some.I need a Laptop Computer. Out of the ones you've mentioned, I'd go for the budget HP, and a spare battery. I'd at least upgrade the ram on any of them.
The HP can upgrade to 8gb/RAM, DDR4 for an 8gb module, is around $30-$35.Last edited by Dragunov; 08-08-2020, 11:04 AM.Comment

I have a Lenovo T480 for my company and love it. One of the best laptops I've had. The recent Dell's I've had, the fan runs like a jet engine.sigpicComment

It depends on how long you want to keep the PC?
While machines last longer today as they are historically powerful, if you buy an new machine that is an old model.... it might become obsolete too soon.
For $250 more, you might get a lot more machine... one that might not become obsolete for 2-3 years more than the cheapest model on the market.
It’s a strange time for use as while businesses are selling / lease returning machines, many kids need new home school machines.Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Quite honestly, OP. My suggestions were for new computers. IF you could deal with a refurb, Lenovo, as others have suggested, are the best. Stay away from the T450/T450s (no power). If you can get a T480 in your budget, make SURE it's had the thunderbolt issue fixed. My suggestions for used Lenovo?
T430, T440p/T540p, or W540.
T430 can use an eGPU. T440p/T540p, can be had with nVidia GeForce, and are the easiest to upgrade.
The W540 is the MOST upgradeable ThinkPad, and also the most powerful within your budget.Last edited by Dragunov; 08-08-2020, 8:07 PM.Comment

My personal opinion is Dell or Lenovo. I currently have a newish T590 that I really, really like. A lot. Due to Covid, wife needed a laptop (she never needed one until now), so she got a Lenovo too. I can't remember which model though. I spent a ton more on laptops in the last year than I have in the last 10 years.
