    Calguns.net consistent 500 error

I've been running into a site error for the last few days. I posted about it here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...128315&page=31 and haven't had anyone reply yet.

Is there a better place to post site problems? I haven't been here that long but couldn't find any place obvious. The error is consistent, so calguns.net is basically broken in this way. The workaround is for me to simply not be able to track new posts in the offending forum (by viewing anonymously where I don't get the 500).

Who is actually driving this bus, that I can talk to about the issue?

While a 500 error is generally an internal error for the host, it can sometimes be caused by other issues than the host. I am on Calguns throughout the day on various circuits and devices, no issues for me.

Right, yes I know. I have some experience with Tomcat - you can see from my 500 page pointer in the suggestions thread I referenced that the Tomcat engine is mentioned, but the page is actually from Parallels H-Sphere, which I have no experience with. Perhaps the problem is with the Macbook that calguns.net is running under Parallels on (kidding).

I explained the various things I tried from the client, to no avail. So I'm hoping to get some server-side help...at least to give me full server problem log entries so together we can work out or work around the problem.

I realize it may be a rare problem. But it happens to me consistently yet only on one single forum, and only when I specifically use my profile - when not logged in it doesn't happen. In the other thread I showed that cookies and other client-saved items don't matter: Whatever the problem is, it's stored/triggered from my specific user profile. The problem looks to be related to unread message status indication on that forum, which is one of the most active forums on calguns.net currently.

        Good God, Parallels. Why...just why!

          LOL

FWIW, I seem to have been able to side-step the problem now - or rather, it's been replaced with a different one.

For reference, here is my original problem post on the suggestions forum (1 of 3). My problematic forum link there (posted again here) does still give me the 500 error page when signed in. However, I've been able to re-subscribe to the forum and now I don't get the 500 unless I use that link directly. Instead, when I mark the forum read (Thread Tools -> Mark this forum read), it marks read on the page but if I refresh the page or go there later, everything becomes unread again...very buggy.

Maybe at some point, someone in charge will see this and we can discuss.

You have not lived until you have dealt with those old Windows cards in a Mac. The card had RAM, non volatile RAM and a CPU. It fit into a slot of a Mac. You installed Parallels and Windows on a partition. This way you could run Windows NT/95/98 inside of a Mac in enterprise environments. That chite gave me PTSD.

I never put a Windows card in a Mac, and don't run the Parallels VM system on my current Macbook, but my first gig out of school had me working on systems for ROLM (Cypress, Cedar) and the latter ran MSDOS in a custom "VM" direct on the 8088. I wrote some of the OS, much of the BIOS, and helped the HW guys design the custom protection stuff - pretty fancy for its day...and all the debugging required to make off-the-shelf graphics apps run there while the CBX side stayed functional almost gave me PTSD :-)

the fact that it does not happen in incognito window means you probably have a bad mojo cookie stored. Likely not all the cookies they use are 'calguns.net' so when you tried to delete calguns data you still did not clear what needed to be cleared.

You need to clear cache and also try to find and clear the offending cookie. Open the chrome developer tools (f12), select the Application tab and expand 'cookies' to see what is being loaded on calguns.

Worse case go nuclear and delete all chrome cookies and cache.

I had this same error two days ago, for maybe a 24 hour period. I figured it was an issue with the browser on my phone so I killed the app, closed all windows, and cleared the cache and memory. That seemed to fix the issue.

Thanks, good advice, I should've used dev tools for this to begin with. I tried to avoid the nuclear option but had deleted all site data for .calguns.net and www.calguns.net ...and I really should've looked for all the other misc cookies as you suggested. But I use AdBlock so all other domain cookies are restricted. I tried this now and it seems there are only 2 other cookie origins both restricted and both tapatalk related...looks like the site isn't too fancy, which makes sense. In any case, my original prob will no longer repro, so crisis averted for now. Next time I'll do what you said to begin with.

Similar, our entire Dev team where I worked in 2000’ish had Sun Ultra 60s as our workstations and SunPCI cards in them to run windows apps for the enterprise. It was really crappy under CDE, but the viewport was a standard X Windows app, so you could at least use Gnome or KDE to pin it to a virtual desktop in full screen mode, so your windows “PC” was just a hot key away. It had a 400 MHz AMD CPU and ran slowly, but it worked for non-GPU tasks, and used a flat disk file as its “HDD,” which with some fiddling could be shared over NFS, and your PC “follow” you if you needed to log into another workstation.

It had about the same performance of VMWare at the time on Wintel, so you really didn’t lose anything being on real iron.

My VPN likes to crap out the connection sometimes. Just gotta turn THAT off, and then back on.
