HAM experts is this a good start?

Have had this in the wish list for awhile and it recently dropped in price. Ill admit when the covid hit I got really into HAM and began studying but have taken a few weeks off to concentrate on investments.

Thinking about revamping my studying and grabbing this radio to full around with. Good idea or am I wasting $70?

A minimal search will bring up that the quality of Baofeng is junk. There is a good chance that it will be out of spec and bleed over to other channels.

Real HAM folks are known to be vigilante in their attitude to people f'n up HAM frequencies.

Because the people who buy them are cheap bastards and could care less if they bleed to other frequencies. And in a lot of the cases I've seen refuse to get their license.

Stick with the 5 watt Baofengs. The battery life is a lot better, the units are less expensive and, there is very minimal advantage to the extra 3 watts. They work and are inexpensive. They are great for back up radios and loaner radios. It's really hard to beat a $25 radio.

Like many my first radios were Beofeng. I have 4. In moving up and getting into DMR I got an AnyTone 878.

I prefer the Hp82-uv model. I also have 2 Radiodity UV82X-3 tri band, I like 220

Not sayin' don't buy Baofeng. They're cheap and fun to play around with. I own like 10 of them, but I also own quality, like Yaesu and Icom.

Go for it. It's a cheap way to get started and you will probably find you want something better as you get more into the hobby. Chinese radios have really upgraded their quality and I have had no problems with the HT and HF rigs I own.

These are cheap ChiCom radios and can be complicated to program. IMHO, they are a poor choice.

Get a Yaesu or Kenwood or Alinco from Ham Radio Outlet or DX Engineering.

The Yaesu FT60 is a great starter radio, and will become a great backup radio later on. If you want to spend a bit more, the Yaesu Ft2DR is easy to program and has GPS on board.
