Here in redneck country, our choices for voice and data services are limited. I have had Suddenlink for 3 years now with only internet and home phone services. Problem is they keep raising the cost of this until I feel like my earlier cost effectiveness has gone away.
For 50MPS and an unlimited phone I started paying $59.95. When I add my monthly Hulu and CBS subscription costs I was still around $79.95. 18 months ago they raised the cost to $74.95 without notice, then 12 months ago it went up another $10 and this month another $10 so now I am at $95 before adding on the additional $20 I pay for my subscription services not counting Amazon because I use Prime for a lot of other things.
In my world, $100 for just internet and phone is crazy. The big issue is that I pay for 50 MPS and my speed test show an average range of 16MPS to 32MPS with an average of 26MPS so I am getting about half of what I am paying for.
A competitor (Century Link) is offering 10MPS DSL for $49 for life. They want an extra $36 for phone which would basically put me back near where I am now so I am considering VoIP.
Question for you guys:
- Is 10MPS (I assume 6-8 would be the actual since no one ever gives you what they promise) adequate for normal home/home business use plus streaming video? One user at a time and overall light usage.
- What VoIP would you recommend for someone who is trying to keep costs low? I would prefer something with low hardware costs and very low monthly fees, if any.
